Guys to say I am pissed off is an understatement. I was driving home from work and there are two cans of paint lying in the road, my choices are:
1) sideswipe the guy next to me
2) Hit the cans of paint
3) Drive over the puddles of paint
Well I chose the third one and ended up with paint all over the driver's side door and lower sill. I figured the paint was latex based but after getting an odor of toluene I realized it was some type of epoxy. I basically had to strip the paint and wax off the door of the car to get this stuff off (used a 3M product to do this); it will not come off the plastic trim on the rocker panel and door sill (havent tried nail polish remover but thought about it but fear it will warp the plastic).
So I have a couple of questions and request some options. I can:
1) Paint the trim (have no idea if this will work and if Rust-o-leum plastic will work on the plastic pieces
2) Buy the trim pieces for the whole passenger side (where do I order these)
Let me know what would be the most cost effective way to do this. If you help me out there will be a beer waiting for you in Chicago.
Todd

The side skits are made of abs.
Use some big boy solvents and get it out, if toluene was used to thin it the first time use it to get the paint off otherwise something stronger (acetone). ABS is pretty indestructible that being said dont get any solvents on your paint or you'll be sorry.

I'd talk to your insurance, you might get a new paint job or something out of this if it got on more than your trim and wheels/tires.

Re: (zerocover)

guys I had one of those F-It moments and decided to raid the girlfriend's nail polish remover and go at it. It looks like it is going to work. Acetone FTMFW!!!!!
Agreed I want to keep it off the paint but I got all the stuff off the paint with 3M adhesive cleaner so I am thinking I may be golden. It looks like it will surely be a weekend project to get all the paint off but at least it can be salvaged. I figure I will get some Amor-Dillo TS1 wipes to restore the fading that will occur on the plastic.
If any of you guys have any fading of any black ABS plastics (I know the older S80s were prone to that) get some of the TS1 and you will be amazed.
http://www.armordillots1.com/
Todd

Re: (carreragt7)

My wife hit the same kind of stuff a few months ago. We are still finding pieces of it on the car now and then. I used goo-gone to get the majority of it off, but it sticks the plastic pieces much more than the paint.

Re: (carreragt7)

I was going to claim it through insurance but figured in the $250 deductable. The paint on the car and rims is all cleaned (3M cleaner stripped it off the paint with no damage to clearcoat). My bodyshop uses it for any adhesive, wax, gunk and the stuff works well. It just wasnt strong enough to cut it on the plastic. I was a bit hestitant to use acetone on ABS because it has a severe effect on the plastic, but figured I would either need to replace the peices or paint them anyway.

Re: (GiRaff3)

Yeah this stuff was similar to roadway paint/epoxy. Nowhere near the ease of cleaning regular paint off. Super nasty stuff!!!!

Re: (Bigblk4)

Guys after thinking about it overnight I started questioning how acetone may affect the plastic (cause warp or brittleness). I am going to buy some Motsenbocker's graffiti remover as it is less harsh and doesn’t actually break down the paint but loosens the cohesion bond between the paint and surface. I’ll let you know if it works.

Good call, I'm a chemical engineer and wouldn't use acetone on any plastic in/around my car. Sorry to hear about the mess you're in, hope it works out.

Re: Please help!!!! Paint all over the cars plastic trim (Bigblk4)

Hey, now's a good time to take the trim off and get it all painted the same color as your car, under insurance too = sweetness!

Yikes, that sucks!
If you decide to fix it yourself, Krylon Fusion or textured bumper paint matches the OEM texture quite well I think something like that should be covered under your insurance... right?

go back and get the buckets, maybe there is a company name on them. from there you could A) call them and explain and they might know what to do. or B) rip them a new jerk.
ok, swedespeed substituted "A**hole" for "jerk". lol

Re: (DGBibo)

Motsenbocker's graffiti remover Lift Off #4 FTW! I ended up picking up two bottles of the stuff and didn't have very high expectations on it working. Well I sprayed the inside rear wheel well, waited the 3 minutes that the directions said I had to wait and it wiped off. I ended up cleaning the whole rocker panel side skirt in under 45 minutes. It took off all of the paint so needless to say it is a happy day for Todd!!! Thanks for the suggestions guys I do appreciate it, and as I stated if you are in Chicago, I got a beer on ice for you.
