I was told my left cv boot is leaking and needs replacement and was quoted almost $1000 CDN. I have a 2008 S40. The mechanic was not helpful and I don’t know much about cars, so your help is greatly appreciated. How long can I can go without replacing this? I don’t drive much during the pandemic (less than 500km per month) and was already planning to upgrade my car next spring. Can I hold off or does this need to be replaced asap? Thanks for your help.

The quote is probably with the Volvo axle and labor. Volvo original axel is like $600 so that sounds fair.

After market axles available way cheaper but people have complained the quality and fitmwnt is off

So what I do is replace the boot yourself. $30-$45.

Here is a full write up and video of me doing it on my s40. Easy peesy

Thank you for your response. I would not replace it myself as I know nothing about cars. Is this an urgent matter? What would happen if I continue to drive with this cv boot leak? Thanks in advanced.

1. You will have a mess under your car
2. Metal on metal will cause excessive heat and then warping cracking and breaking limited to the axle
3. Your axel will fail meaning
3.a. It will sound like absolute $**** metal on metal clanking and such
3.b. Your (I assume FWD car) could be a single tire drive car.

While 3.b. Is super far out. You will probably get 1000-3000 miles before noise, and $hit, you might get another 20k miles before failure

If I was young and poor I’d run it.

I got two axels coming off my car rebuilt you can have for free. Pay shipping. But they only fit if you AWD and auto.

@joelkennethsmith - If a CV axle snaps the car will not move at all due to the open differential. That is a pretty far-fetched scenario, though.
Yeah. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a thing to the extreme. Mainly just noise.

For what its worth, I replaced my front driver axle with an Advance Auto one, about $80 about 25k miles ago. So far it seems to be working just fine, no noise and not excessive vibrations. The risk you take here is if the new one does suck which is well documented here, you'd need to change it. I was okay with this since I got my car for cheap and did all the work myself so a new axle wouldn't be terrible for me to replace in the garage.
