I purchased the Volvo crossbars and read on the SS forum to place them slightly in front of the B and C pillars. They are approximately 29 or so inches apart. Yakima suggests they be from 24"-42" apart, so that is not the issue. The carrier seem to hang out in front of the windshield more than necessary, so I was wondering if I should move the crossbars back toward the rear of the XC90. This move of say 6-8 inches would not interfere with the opening and closing of the rear hatch. I have made one trip of approximately 1,400 miles with this carrier position and everything seemed fine. Thoughts???

As long as the box is secure and doesnt interfere with opening the rear hatch then you should be fine. Just by looking at the photo I might say move it back a bit.

Before driving, always give the box a shake/jerk test to make sure its completely shut, locked, and secure to the crossrails/vehicle.

Make sure the Skybox feet does not interfere with the sunroof function. I have a Thule box and moved the crossbar aft of the sunroof tilt area since tilting was able to interfere with cargobox feet.

This carrier cannot be locked and key removed unless it is completely closed....that's a nice feature.

Move it a tad back ... just for looks and for aerodynamics.
If you can imagine the wind flowing up your windshield, if you can, try to match that flow (if you know what I mean)

Here is my setup
