Preface: I have not had any downpipes other than stock.

I went to get the DP installed today. It took nearly two hours because the installer had never worked on an R before, but they were very interested and they also use the 19T turbo regularly in performance applications. These were the sticking points from my experience:

There is much less flex in the PhuzDP than the Stock one. Seriously, the turbo side on the stock pipe will flop around if you hold it upright. I wanted to put that image in your head, and also let you know that there can be some more vibration in the car, but that could just be the power. Regardless, this looks like it would be the case for all of the aftermarket downpipes, based solely on the length of the flex pipe section.

If there is any shortcoming in the PhuzDP, it is that there is no concentric seat on the turbo-side flange for the turbo collar to sit in. I will let Matt explain this in more detail if he likes, but this makes properly mating the turbo and the DP a little more difficult, as it initially had an exhaust leak when they installed it.

[I was able to get Matt on the phone and he discussed with the shop owner. The issue was resolved and there was no leak when they retorqued the bolts].

Now the interesting stuff:
It is definitely louder on initial acceleration, but it is about the same decibel level when the turbo is spooled up.

The turbo spools up much sooner (obviously), and also smoother. I have had the ipd TCV for a few months, if anyone is wondering. As I have a GT, I never really heard the turbo spool as distinctly as I do now, simply because the engine is quieter than it was before.

Flooring it on the highway reflects the above. There is considerably less turbo lag, as you would expect. It may even be better for the car to not get that "kick" of boost.

Does anyone know how heavy the stock DP is? Matt's is 15 lbs and definitely lighter.

The instantaneous fuel mileage when coasting in a GT increases much faster. I am feeling less engine drag. This makes sense.

The difference in low end torque was so distinct, and my sphincter was confused and ill prepared for the shock delivered to my butt dyno. Seriously, my rear iris closed just a little.

In the end, I am happier, and my car sounds much angrier. The shop I used is also interested in doing exhausts and possibly manifolds as time goes on. If anyone has something they would like to see, let me know, as I now unofficially drive the "test car" and they are very flexible.

I will get an idea of it when I get over there and they check for any exhaust leaks. They will be measuring it once I get it up on a lift. I will let you know, but I would probably ballpark it around 500.

In first gear, if I floor it from a slow roll, the car screams like a bat out of hell and pulls me into the seat hard.

I had some vibration at first, but things have settled down now that it has been installed for a bit. I imagine that flex pipe has a bit of a break in period before it finds the sweet spot.

this is very exciting!!! I havent installed mine yet.. but very soon.

Can we get some more info about what 'tweak' was needed to be sure we dont see a leak at the turbo side?

IT all sounds goood... http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

I'd be interested in your stock DP if you want to sell it. I need one to mock up my own custom DP. PM or Email me if you are going to part with it. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Not so much a tweak as making sure that all 3 bolts (turbo side) are finger tightened evenly before being torque down. I will probably ask my fabricator to machine that groove in the turbo-side face of the flange so that it will house that lip off the exhaust port. I am not sure why KKK has that lip on there.

So as long as it is tightened evenly, you won't experience any leaks. I have over 6000 miles on mine already and zero leaks.

Thanks for the kind words, Zak!

I think it is set up to be a little like hub centering rings on a wheel. And like wheels, based on the tolerances and specs, it may or may not be necessary. Could also reduce stresses on the bolts. Tough call, but it should be fine.

For those that are installing, my recommendations are this:

Have them put the turbo side on first. Much easier to flex the exhaust end down than vice versa.

Take Matts recommendation on tightening it down. I think a machined groove on the flange would be an improvement, whether its necessary or not.

As stated before, I will be going in to have them check for leaks later next week, just to be sure.

I can already tell that its sitting better and rattles are pretty much gone after a romp on the highway. It got a little quieter too.

If in the area, I definitely recommend IPS Motorsports. They are very well versed in doing absurd work on cars anywhere from 300-1300 hp. They've built 3 vettes with 1000+ hp at the wheels. It's pretty absurd.
