is it just me ?
i've been doing my own oil changes since the 60's
and i swear
there is something about a car with a fresh oil change... one that you did yourself...
...it just seems smoother, more silky powerful, quicker and faster....

I just love it ... taking the car out for a test drive after you did the oil.

Re: performance tweak rarely spoken of: the oil change (petew)

i think so too.
i still do them at between 2500 and 3500 miles, with synthetic castrol.
i honestly think it does make a difference.
some say it is a waste of money.
it is my money.
edge on the v40, german castrol on the 70.

Re: performance tweak rarely spoken of: the oil change (hastee)

Not a waste. Reduced friction in the motor means less wear on moving parts, means better fuel consumption as the engine has to do less work. You save on repairs in the long-run as well. You might even try to convince yourself that the better fuel mileage helps to pay for the increased frequency of changes.
Will the upgrade from semi to full synthetic pay for itself? Hmmmmm.
I pay someone $10 so that I can snoop around under the car and not get dirty
+1 Pete - it's a great feeling after an oil change. Throw in a car wash at the same time, and it feels like a new car.

Does anyone think that waiting for the service due indicator is too long between oil changes on our cars? I use only synthetic oil.

I chance my full synthetic oil every 2,500 - 3,000 miles.
It's good for the car, and I love doing it.
I'd never wait 7,500 for an oil change - that's just silly

Re: performance tweak rarely spoken of: the oil change (petew)

I don't know whether it's psychological or real but I feel the difference, too.
I change mine every 5K miles or annually...whichever is earlier. I only put 3K miles on my R last year so it was changed on its birthday. Some people say that changing oil every 5K miles is a waste (especially with synthetic)...a ploy by the oil companies to exploit consumers' fears about engine breakdown. Maybe so...but it's cheap insurance on an expensive (to fix) item.
-Eric

I feel like my car runs better after it is washed too! It likes to be clean!
I just had the oil changed last week and it feels like silk to drive.

Some say it is a waste of a perfectly good oil.........
But at least you spend more time under the car and have a better chance to detect any possible issues.
Like leaking angle gear

Re: performance tweak rarely spoken of: the oil change (Denis)

You will not see any HP gains after an oil change. There's no 'lost horsepower' with the modern engines running synthetic as numerous high mileage oil analysis show.
