Peg Repair

I just got home from vacation and loaned my R to my son to find out he blew out my 5 month old tire by hitting a pot hole.
The tire is destroyed and the peg has rim rash as well as a dent in the inside bead. I can grind/polish out the rash but the dent in the inside bead is beyond my capabilities. I also need to make sure it didn't warp or worse.
What are my options to get it repaird?
Any advice would be appreciated...mostly by him.
Thanks, Jim

Any Mobile Wheel Repair Services in your area?

What if he's on 18's? Also, where do you find new OEM 17" Pegs for $200?

Any pics of how bad the bend/dent is?

I have had rims repaired before and a qualified repair shop can do a good job, especially on a dent on the inside of the rim. I had a repair done on a 20 in. OEM wheel on a Ford Super Duty and it worked out great. However, that was a forged wheel which is easier to weld. Also, they usually like to leave the weld proud of the surface which means more weight to balance it. Not such a big deal on a truck but on a wheel like a Peg it would make balancing much more difficult. In my case, a replacement wheel from the dealer was about $1,000. There are no standards in the US for repairing wheels so you are taking a chance when you have it done. And having a wheel come apart on the highway is not good. If you can get a replacement wheel for $200, that is the way to go. Your son should easily be able to afford that.

Also, to properly balance a repaired wheel, which is never going to be 100% round, will usually require a Road Force balance, which most good tire shops can do, but costs more since it requires taking several measurements of the wheel w/o tire mounted to get the runouts (inside, outside, both lateral and vertical edges), then mounting the tire, running the roadforce arm, and possible rotating the tire on the wheel and running the arm again. (2-3 mounts on the balance machine and 1-2 mounts on the tire machine).

I do not what S60PoweR's problem is, but I had great results with a Mobile Wheel Repair business repairing mine and they were reasonable. Good luck.

My problem is with people telling others to use google. this forum exists to help individuals, not try to shame them for asking questions.

As far as mobile wheel repair goes, it depends on the damage. I think they can easily repair most bends as long as no cracking is present. Any cracks require welds obviously which can be difficult depending on the location of the crack as well as the process used for the wheel (cast vs forged).

I'm dealing with the same dilemma, Jim. Luckily, living near the Motor City has its benefits. A local member (ElementR) guided me to a shop in Southfield called Restock. http://www.restockwheels.com/ I believe you can send him your wheel(s) for repair. He quoted me about $100 per wheel since I also had minor inner lip damage. That cost included repair, refinish, mount and balance. I would call him to verify this pricing.

I can't speak to their quality yet, but once I get my wheels done I'll post up my results. Good luck!

I would try craigslist, preferably search tempest. It always pays 2 fold to have a full spare, especially in situations like this donuts just don't cover down time for long commutes.

^ Yes, Restock is a quality shop ran by a seasoned wheel engineer in the automotive OEM business so this is not a fly by night place. I can attest to their work and would never hesitate to recommend them to someone.

Thanks for the info from all. It is an 18" wheel. I took it to a local shop and they tried to straighten the bend but with my luck it cracked. it is not deep in the bead but they are sending out for repair and it is going to be $150 all in. I expect it back mid week and will pay attention to the balance when I get it back and have the tire mounted on Friday.
Thanks again for the info...really appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim
