A much taller friend just pointed out that the paint is peeling on the rooftop of my S60 AWD along the raingutter strips on either side of the moon roof. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a manufacturer's defect? The paint is holding up great on the rest of the car.

Hmm, I've never heard of that before. You should try and get it fixed before it gets worse though. I would expect a body shop to charge you about $500 to do it. They will probobly sand the clear coat down, and then fix the spots with body matched paint, and then re-clear it. I'm not really sure, but there might be still coverage for a defect like that.

Typical with water-based paint systems in Nevada climate. It'll happen sooner or later depending on how the color absorbs heat and how much time the car spends parked under the sun. The only fix is complete strip and repaint of the roof. Next it will happen to the hood and trunk lid.

The 2001's had this problem with many of them, but yours is the 1st car after the 01 model year I've heard that this happen to!
You can repaint them or just buy new ones as unfortunately you're out of warranty.
Part is called a roof strip or a gutter strip

Was that the roof itself peeling or the rain gutters peeling?

Oh those speckled plastic strips I have weren't a factory option?

I think I had the same thing as you do, mine is also a 2004, but it was only only the very edge of that strip, and all I did was use a fine razor blade to take it off because underneath was another layer of paint. it almost seemed like it was some sort of overspray.

The problem is only on the rain gutters, not the entire rooftop, and it's peeling up from along the edges of the gutters. I think the gutters are plastic strips. The car is the greenish/silver metallic.

Yea and mine was only happening on the very edge of the strip.

Okay I misunderstood. It's as JRL says. Removing just the strips and repainting should not be too expensive. The degree of difficulty with the strips is that they have an aluminum strip inside, and it bends very easily when installing, and it's very difficult to straighten it up again. Handle with care.

Re: Peeling paint on rooftop (Mika)

I have the same problem on my charcoal colored '02 S60. It is peeling only on the rain gutter strip. It seems like it was a poor choice of materials. It would be nice if Volvo picked up the tab for it. I have been putting off getting it fixed for awhile now.
