My question is, has anyone had their leather dash replaced under CPO warranty? I took the car (2018 CPO S90 t6 inscription) into the dealer for an oil change and some other warranty work. I asked about the dash and was told that it would not be covered and would cost 6k to replace.

I was recently poking around on the forums and saw a few older posts about getting their dash replaced under CPO warranty.

I’m curious if anyone has any tips for me so that I too can get mine replaced under warranty. Do I need to be pushy (not my strong suit) Use certain key words? Was it potentially an un knowledgeable service department? There are two other dealers in my area that I can contact.

Thank you in advanced for your insights!

It would fall under the exclusions for a CPO warranty so I don't see how it would be covered. I think it would be okay under a new car warranty though, so if you still have a new car warranty I think you could get it done (4 yr 50k). Depends when the car was sold and how many miles you have. Unfortunately it's a problem I've seen before, and if it's close to an edge there really isn't a good fix that I've come across.

Okay I might as well give it a try and contact Volvo North America since I have tied one dealer which said no

Its a CPO so it sounds like it might not be covered then. Might try another dealer just to see what they say. It’s not too bad at the moment, I’m just thinking long term that it’s going to get worse. I suppose if it does I’d take it to an upholstery shop and see what they have to say

It isn't covered by CPO. But goodwill might be in play.
Is goodwill a discretionary thing that the service writer decides on or Volvo North America? Curious how that works

These are two entirely difference situations. This is a 4 year old used car. Companies have a warranty, and things that aren't covered are no one else's responsibility but the owner, defect or not.

Just because it's CPO doesn't mean it might not still have original warranty on it. Warranties overlap sometimes so you should look at all the options. If the car is under 4 years from in service date, which is possible on a 2018, and under 50k miles, then you shouldn't be asking about CPO, you should be asking about the original warranty. Those would be the "key words" you wanted to know. It still might not be covered, but the new car warranty has fewer exclusions. If you just asked a service advisor if it could be fixed under CPO then they would likely answer correctly "no"... and possibly not question if you might still have a new warranty. Reading the warranty manual myself, I would see it as being

What Is Warranted Volvo warrants that repairs required to Volvo passenger vehicles due to defects in material or workmanship and occurring under normal use will be made at no charge for parts and/ or labor during the warranty period.
And it does not seem to meet the only exclusion I see for trim:

Damage to the interior (soft trim, upholstery, and seating areas) resulting from normal wear and tear, misuse, abuse, or negligence.
And you can certainly try an upholstery shop. We've tired with some of our customers, and if it's near the edge then it never lasts. I think there is foam backing or something that is the problem, sorta like trying to reglue a headliner.

It isn't up to the service writer or even the dealer. You'd have to contact VCNA. Then they will work with your dealer and decide if any assistance will be offered, usually based somewhat on ownership history and service history.

Thank you very much for your reply. While I am under 50k, I think I am past the 4 year mark from when it’s PDI inspection was performed but I’ll have to dig up the paper work to confirm. I had read the warranty manual as well and agree with you that the cause is not from wear and tear. In fact I think the service advisor I talked to mentioned the warranty didn’t cover wear and tear and my comment was, well how is a dash subjected to wear and tear? The sun/heat cycles? That to me is something that should be considered during the design phase.

Thanks again for your reply. Sounds like I might be out of luck with this one but it’s good to have more information either way.

Gottcha, thanks for the info.
I don’t have much service history nor ownership history as this is my first Volvo. Oh well!

Goodwill is your friend. Try taking this issue up with VCNA. It doesn't hurt to try and sweet talk/email your way into a free (to you) dashboard. I've had things repaired/replaced on my V90CC as goodwill way past the warranty period, even with me never speaking with VCNA. Try it, plead your case, tell them you are a first-time owner, planning to be a long-time Volvo owner, and the worse that will happen is, Volvo rejecting the goodwill replacement.

Write a letter to the SVP of quality in Sweden. That is what I had to do to get them to cover it after my goodwill request was denied.
What is the email address ?
