First let me start out by stating I’m in CT. A few weeks ago I called a reputable European auto mechanic that I hadn’t been to before to service my 95’ 850. In my previous Volvo (c30) I had always taken it to a mechanic that I had gone to for over 10 years but unfortunately he passed away last year. I recently purchased the car and it had high miles and was showing signs of PCV system needing to be replaced, also the previous owner had stated it was never serviced. So I called the mechanic to get a quote over the phone (first mistake was not recording the call). I told him the entire pcv system needed to be replaced, he asked for some info about the car and said he would get back to me with a quote. He called back a little later and told me with parts and labor that it would cost between $670-$750. I agreed because that price aligned with what I had seen online. He said he would have the car ready in about 2 business days. So I dropped the car off and everyday after the 2 days he says that “it’ll be done tomorrow we’re just finishing it up”. My car ended up being there for a week till he lets me know it’s ready. Tonight I go to pick it up and he has an invoice for $1350!! I couldn’t believe it, I told him that that was almost double what the agreed amount was and that if it was going to cost that much for he should have let me know. I told him that I would not pay that amount as it was totally unfair practice. He told me the job is very involved and it was no easy fix. I watched countless videos on this fix as I was preparing to tackle it myself but my work schedule had not allowed me the time, but it seems fairly straight forward. I know that you can hit some snags but he had a lot of time to let me know what was going on. Anyways, I told him that the price was ridiculous and told him I’d talk to someone about it. I left the car and talked to a close friend who is a lawyer and she asked for the information about the shop, the quote, and the work done and will be in touch with them. I just don’t like the idea of there being bad blood especially when they have my car in their possession. The guy at the shop I talked to was actually very nice and I wasn’t being rude either I just told him the price was not fair and that I couldn’t in good conscious pay the price he was asking. Anyone else have an experience like this? What was the outcome?
