My WRX was totaled a few weeks ago. I've been looking at new cars and I ended up with a Volvo S40 T5 FWD Auto. I really like the car but I think my wife likes it more. She really pushed me into it instead of getting another WRX. I was looking at the new 2006 WRX limited edition. I'm 28 and she said I have out grown that car.
Now the Volvo has a bunch of features that I like MORE than the WRX, but it's much slower. Why is that? It's only 40 lbs heavier? Seems weird.
I've been reading all the posts about chipping your car.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=52629
I have seen to consistent themes.
1. Don't chip your car unless you have tons of cash.
2. Don't chip your car if you're the dealership "type" of person.
I for the most part, fall into both of these categories. So what can I do to make my Volvo faster? Maybe I'm retarded but I never realized how much I miss my WRX speed. My 05 comes with all the service work and I also bought the extended service plan to 6 years or 75,000. Hmmmm....
Help!!!

Re: Past WRX Owner (GoosEEm)

Welcome to the forums.
First off, sucks to have your car totalled, but atleast it seems no one got seriously hurt, but ending up with an S40 isn't all that bad . Anyways, if you were going for speed, why did you get automatic? Manual is significantly faster in the T5. Also, stock vs stock, '05 T5 vs '05 WRX (both manual -- don't have much experience with the new '06 WRX), it is a good race with the T5 coming out on top (based on numbers and personal experience). So I guess when you say the Volvo is much slower, I'm assuming you modded your Subie a bit..?
Anything you do to modify the hardware on your car by law won't void the warranty. What will void it is if a problem occurs that is caused by the aftermarket part (ex. you have aftermarket brakes, which fail, and cause you to get into an accident); which is why people say not to modify your car and risk it. Also, most dealerships aren't too friendly with modding, so it's hard to explain to them that whatever you've done isn't harmful (they just want your money, afterall).
Cost is inevitable so that point (#1) is kinda moot. None the less, the most cost effective way to make the T5 go faster is chipping it, without a question, and you get some serious power gains. Yeah, its kinda pricey, but would you rather spend ~$1,000 on a full exhaust that only gives 10hp?
Take care, and congradulations on your new car

Re: Past WRX Owner (GoosEEm)

Was your WRX an Auto too? If it wasn't, that could maybe be part of it as auto's can "feel" slower at least off the line. Just a thought. I do know that the Volvo is more "refined" which usually means they try to make it as quiet and un sport like as possible to try and accomodate people that don't like engine noise or exhaust noise (i'm not one of them) so that can contribute to the feeling of it being slow. Personally though I find the s40 just about right, you get just enough feedback to know what the car is doing.
I don't know about "outgrowing" either, I like the WRX and i'm 29 haha, I'm not crazy about the interior (my wife hates it way more) but I realize that most the money went into the drivetrain and i'm ok with that.
As for a chip, there's a lot of fear surrounding them, and honestly, if I didn't personally know a chip tuner myself I would probably feel the same way. The main thing to watch out for is to stay with a reputable company, someone that doesn't make outrageous claims about power and such. Also, there is a lot of fear about warranty and although it can give you some trouble with the dealership (it doesn't hurt to try and get a feel for your service dept. before doing such things) basically it is illegal for them to deny warranty unless they can prove that the Mod caused a direct failure (in other words if break a suspension mount they can't blame it on your "chip", but if you blow a turbo, then you could be in a little trouble). Also, it sounds like the dealer likes to reflash their ECU's quite often, so finding a chip dealer that doesn't mind reflashing you after a dealer trip, or finding a company where you can do that yourself would be a bonus).
Personally, I don't think chips are as hard on cars as some people think as long as you go with a good company. Basically all you are doing is modifying the modifying the fuel map somewhat and changing the turbo characteristics a little. The one company I know of actually does a lot of research looking into just how much a stock turbo can handle and makes sure they are well below that. Their idea is to increase power without decreasing reliability, that's the key.
Hope that helps! Did you do any mods to the WRX? Have you chipped a car before?
Anyway, welcome, i'm new here myself.
Edit: i'm to slow ^^ he hit most of the major points.

The Subies are geared low enough to pull pretty hard but they tend to run out of steam at the top end.

I dont know if this guys WRX was Automatic or not, but I know for sure that the WRX does come in an Automatic cause Ive driven one!
Sorry to hear about the totalled Rex, Id say you can never "out grow" that magnificent car! Nothing better than the AWD of a Subaru!
Good luck with the T5, it can be quite a fast little car! As seen in some of the Videos posted about two weeks ago, they can make a 350Z look dumb!
And if you wanna make it faster... Get it CHIPPED!! No doubt!

I was in the exact same situation, I totalled a WRX and ended up with a S40 T5 (6-speed though). Hence my screen name.
I love the Volvo interior, ride and looks. The Subaru will always be faster though. I only did a few minor bolt-on mods to that sucker and I was running about 275hp with a 5-second or less 0-60. A few more mods would have a WRX over 300hp easy. Aftermarket parts are very easy to find and the market is competitive so pieces are pretty cheap. Volvo aftermarket is there (I was thrilled to find that out) but it's just not as extensive.
Maybe what you're missing is the closed loop/open loop fueling in the Subaru. About 4k RPM it feels like you get rear-ended by a train if you're tuned well. It's just the nature of the TD04 turbo, it doesn't become effective until about 3k, whereas the T5 comes on MUCH sooner.
Reflashes are generally safe, at least from reputable tuners. They mostly adjust the timing and boost (and fueling to support) to take better advantage of good fuel. Some of the tuners even have warranties of their own if something goes wrong. I will be going down that road soon.
EDIT: yes, the WRX is that much faster, at least from a stop. Plus you hit 60mph in 2nd gear which is a shift or two prior to the S40. It's simply a different car and they're tough to compare.

If I'm accelerating past 60, I'd be in third by then but in a 0-60 drag I would not shift up.
Yours an auto maybe? Even then, second is about the same final ratio.
Old post: http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=33779
Tom.

Re: (tmtalpey)

Thanks for the input! Yeah my WRX was a manual. The reason I got the automatic is because I found a used T5 and I got a smoking deal on it.
The Volvo dealership wouldn't let me leave to go test drive the 2006 WRX.
So that's how I ended up with the T5.
Yeah I think my WRX had more low end torque. But I'm not really comparing apples to apples because now I have an automatic.
I called my dearship today and they said that if I chipped my car they would still honor the warranty unless the "chip" does damage to another part of the car. So it's sounds like they aren't totally against modding.
But it's always the final decison of the service manager on what actually caused the damage. And you know how that story ends. Haha..
So far I like Evolve and BSR. BSR seems nice because you can flash it back to factory settings. I like Evolve because it seems like they work closer with Volvo and they are closer to me here in Las Vegas.
Thanks again for the input.

I think the automatic is giving you the wrong impression. A friend of mine has an 05 wrx and I can say one thing with experience. You have to rev the crap out of it to launch. Plus, if you try to show off with a car load of people the S40 still feels almost normal, where as the wrx feels the pain. I mean he couldn't really show me the power until we emptied out the people. It seemed to annoy him actually, but oh well. Put it this way, if there were four people in each car I would put my money on the S40.

Re: Past WRX Owner (GoosEEm)

goose - see my mod list below.
ive run against manual rexes with light mods (but rolling start because we wanted to save our gearboxes). just about neck and neck in 1st & 2nd. but in 3rd its all over for them.
the only thing though, is the currently, the most u can squeeze out of the S40 is about 260 + hp and about 400nm of torque. thtas aout the limit of the turbo, which no one has been able to swop out.
whereas with a moddex rex, really the skys the limit.
the other thing is, even stock, a rex isnt necessairly that fast. the 0-100 times are the only impressive thing because they can launch perfectly. but just normal rolling starts, or 3rd gear pulls, a stock T5 should be able to keep up pretty easy against a stock rex.
even more so at higher speeds cos of the longer gearing of the T5.

Re: Past WRX Owner (Mistral)

I hear what you guys are saying about the WRX. And you are right...if I had a few friends with me.....The car was ALOT slower. And you do have to time your launch just right with the WRX.
And as far as everyday driving around the T5 is SO much smoother because of the Automatic.
I guess I just need to have a few mods done and I think I'll be happy. The T5 is growing on me. Haha...
Thanks again for all the input. This group is great.

Re: Past WRX Owner (slo-vo)

assuming both were automatics, or manual, i would say the FWD would be faster on a roll, simply cos of the weight advantage. launching though, might be different.
but i dont think the difference will be that great, so AWD should still be able to do just as well.

Re: Past WRX Owner (Mistral)

Let see I've slapped down 3 WRX most with mods, from a roll of course, many of my duds own WRXs and from a 30 MPH roll they are complete candy unless they got BIG mods.
