I know a little bit about xenon bulbs, I know there is a ballast, and the bulb itself.. If it went purple on me and i'm getting the error on the trip computer, then what needs replacement, the bulb, or the ballast?
How much for either?
Wheres a good place to shop for one?
Thanx

You need a D2R bulb. They should ideally be replaced in pairs. The colour temperature does change with age and it is more likely that the bulb will need to be replaced than the ballast. They can range from $50-$100+ for the pair. You can check with your dealer or use placed like bulbs.com or Boston Volvo Village to check the Volvo lamp. The Volvo lamp is made by Phillips as I recall.

Re: (adykes)

SharpHID
or Umnitza always works.
Get them in pairs, d2r or d2s it won't matter. One will have a tiny bit more light output.
Feel free to upgrade to 6000k for a slightly more white hue.
Factory is 4300k which still has a bit of yellow.

The D2S won't fit without cutting a notch in the base of the bulb. The D2S and D2R are keyed differently.
You can find the rare and elusive D2C which is a D2S bulb with both keys.
D2S bulbs have a slightly higher effective light output because they lack a small patch of black paint on the bulb capsule. This spot is used to reduce glare that the reflective optics type headlamps can cause. The actual light output of the arc is the same, but the D2R has this spot that blocks some light and the D2S does not.

D2S fit without mods in my 2007 V70R. Noticeably more light from them compared to OEM D2R. 4300 is slightly yellow but puts out the most lumens if my memory serves me right.

It depend which company makes the HID bulb, many of them are d2r/d2s compatible.

Re: Passenger side headlight is now purple... WTF.. How much for a new one? (Dj Schmidty)

When mine went purple, I changed the bulb to solve the problem. Don't get it from the dealer - they charged me $200 for one D2R bulb - had to have it at the time.
D2C Bulbs here for $179/pair:
http://www.automotivelightstor...D=147

and for a heckuva comparo on lights (i.e., all the info you could ever want regarding the R and lights) check out "R" Kelly's "Adventures in R lighting" or something like that thread. It's a few years old now, but still good info in there!!
-Steve
