The door lock mechanism on the front passenger door on my 200 S70 seems faulty. When I lock the car, the little up/down indicator up by the window goes down on all four doors, but only the drivers side and rear doors will lock. The front passenger door can be opened, even though the little stick thing on it is visibly down (sorry, I don't know the official name for that piece).
The physical lock mechanism on the inside of the door feels loose when I touch it, and I can push it into the "lock" position when I have the door ajar, but if I try to shut the door in this position it will not close because the metal locking bit gets in the way . I cannot get the mechanism into the lock position when the door is closed, but i can manually push it into locked/unlocked position when the door is ajar.

Any idea what could be going on? Is it an electrical/power lock problem, or is it merely a sticky lock? Any do-it-yourself suggestions I could try before I bring it into the shop?

Re: Passenger Door on S70 Won't Lock (ericd)

Usually these lock actuators go bad, but it shouldn't open in the locked (down) position
so...
It's (the lock mechanism) broke!

Depends on what's wrong. A door actuator is over $130 installed if I recall. If you have other problems, who knows?
YOU don't even know what's wrong yet

I have the exact same problem as you right now. I brought my car in to my indy mechanic, and he tells me that it is indeed the door lock mechanism itself that needs to be replaced. The part itself is about $120, plus an hour of labor to install. If you wanted to save a few bucks, you could probably even install it yourself. There's a really good step-by-step guide on Volvospeed (I think) that leads you through the process of getting the door panel off and then back on again if you want to try it.

I was fiddling with the physical lock mehcnism while the door was ajar, and I seem to have gotten it stuck in the up (locked) position. I can no longer close the door at all, because the lock is in the way.
Is there any way, short term, that I could get the lock back down so I could close the door?

Re: (ericd)

Got it repaired, along with the red light along the inside of the door (the part that makes contact with the car body), which apparently had shattered and gotten into the lock mechanism, a part of my problem. They had to replace the lock actuator.
The whole thing was like $230.
