Pass Airbag off issues

Lately, the passenger airbag off will disable itself while driving with the front passenger seat occupied.
Previously the sensor was replaced and recalibrated due to the same issue.
Has anyone else experience this ?

I'd give it one more chance (CA lemon I believe states 3 failed attempts or a total of 30 days in the shop). But you can probably push the lemon law issue now since it's a major safety issue. I would.

I believe 2006 was the first year that the R had seat occupancy sensors. It sounds like they did not get it right in terms of sensitivity.

A shame to have you coming back three times for a simple sensor issue.

Re: (v70r.fan)

My dealer checked the car and found no codes indicating a fault.
Per Volvo it works fine.

You would figure the system would be programmed to know that once a passenger has been detected, they probably will not leaving the car in motion @ 45mph. Wouldn't the system log this ?

I'm going to start filming the issue as proof of a problem if it continues. Service just recalibrated and programmed the weight sensor. Hopefully all is well.

I'm welcome to any advice . . .

I was at my local dealer this morning (Power Irvine) and I swear you must've been the guy in front of me who was talking about the issue.. if not the person in front of me was talking about the same thing and the service rep mentioned it could've been a cell phone transmitter that set it off. If it was you I was the 28 year old wearing the green "El Barrio" t-shirt with the brown shorts... I'll be picking my R up tomorrow around noon from the Permaplating. I live in Aliso Viejo too, near the intersection of Wood Canyon & Aliso Creek.

Edit: I noticed that when my g/f was reclining in the passenger chair the "airbag off" sensor was on, I figured that was normal though.

We live in the same area.
I didn't remember seeing you or hearing the rep mention anything about the cell phone.

I'll be keeping up this post because the air bag should not turn itself off under any circumstance which would threaten to jeopardize any occupant. Due to safety issues, I can't accept anything but a properly working system. Besides, Volvo = safety and needs to back it up.

2006 V70R....same issue here too.

I noticed if you un-buckle and buckle the seat belt, sometimes it re-sets, but not always.

I have to make an appointment soon, so I will let you know if they find anything OR if anyone finds out sooner let us know!

Who I saw was probably a second customer having a similar issue (it was around 8:15AM), at least you have company. I think video taping of the issue is a smart idea, thank goodness for video phones.

Re: Pass Airbag off issues (v70r.fan)

Mine did that the other day when my roommate was sitting in the pass seat. But, after he got out of the car and got back in the light went off. Also, after he got out of the car I moved the seat back so I'm not sure if that did something. I don't often have passengers in my car so I really haven't noticed this issue.

Same issue here. I noticed it a few months ago when I placed my backpack in the passenger seat with a seatbelt on (for no apparent reason).
So, I thought the computer system was intelligently sensing that an object was "sitting" in the passenger side. Recently however, airbag would deactivate even when my wife is sitting in the passenger side. I need to get this checked out at 7500 mile service. I have an MY06 S60R.

I was able to drive the car to the dealer with the pass ari bag off along with my passenger. Now the Volvo service rep has the car and is installing a sensor bracket. Apparently they are aware this issue, I'm not sure if its related to the "R" seats exclusively or not. I'll post up again later.

Re: (v70r.fan)

The Volvo FTS took charge of the repair instead of the service dept.
From what I understand the issue is related to the R seats.
The FTS installed a OWS spring kit to for road vibration damping.

I'll post how it holds up.

Anyone have TB on this ?

Re: (Pat S)

im still having this issue as well after going to the dealer once about it. they tried to fix it by doing a recalibration or something of the sensor i guess but that didnt fix it. i may bring it up again at my next oil change if someone can post a TNN or something for it.

Re: (xtremeboard)

There is a TNN, that has more to do with proper repair procedures for the Occupant Weight Sensor, (OWS). Check TNN 88-44, issued August 21, 2006. It has to do with the tubing going from the bladder in the seat to the actual sensor, becoming twisted.

Remember that there was no OWS on the R series until 2006, so there is a small sample on the board. I suspect they are having some issues with migrating the OWS to the R seat, which is different from others, and such a low volume item it is not getting a great deal of attention.
