Re: Parts Reference List (JimLill)

Thanks to my friend Michael who managed to speak to some Bosch people. They have listings for various car models and the equivalent Bosch replacement parts. Here are the R parts:

Not listed in the list above is the alternative replacement part for our IAT/MAP hybrid sensor shown below:

our OEM sensor is not listed there (0 261 230 106), but the equivalent part no. is (0 261 230 042).
For the above part no., the pressure range of our OEM sensor is the same, i.e. press range is between 20 to 250kPa (absolute pressure). What this means is that our OEM boost pressure sensor can only measure boost up to 1.5bar or 21.8psi (minus 1 bar for atm press). Beyond that boost level, the ECM will try to calculate the boost pressure...using other sensor inputs.
I have been using another bosch part no. 0 281 002 437 without problems for almost a year now in my 04R.... its plug and play... no codes thrown. This sensor measures boost up to 2.0bar (20 to 300kpa). As a side effect, the ECM still thinks that the boost sensor max value is at 1.5bar, so, it detects a slow build up of boost when I'm using this sensor. The ecu then tries to compensate by trying to build boost faster. NOT RECOMMENDED if you don't have compensatory devices to prevent boost spikes.... but it works well for me.

Re: Parts Reference List - NGK Spark Plugs -- CORRECTION

NGK (non-EOM) replacement Double Platinum 7654 PLFR6A-11 $11.71
Double Platinum plug, 14mm, 26.5mm (1.04") reach, 5/8" hex, gasket seat, resistor, projected tip, extreme long life double platinum, fine point platinum on center electrode, platinum tip laser welded on ground electrode, .044"gap
NGK extreme life plug. By using the highest platinum content in the industry, NGK has created an extremely long life spark plug. Laser welded platinum tip on center electrode and platinum tip on the ground electrode. The center electrode is taper cut which aids in focusing the spark while reducing the voltage necessary to start the combustion process, this will provide better throttle response, improve efficiency and allow a smoother idle.

http://www.ngk.com/more_info.asp?AAIA=&pid=3626

Quote, originally posted by duchski »

NGK (non-EOM) replacement:
Double Platinum Plug PFR6G (retail part# 4793) Gap .032 $12.00 ( x 5)
Plug is much shorter than OEM but still recommended by NGK for the R engine. Double platinum has extended longevity and ability to hold the specs; gap etc.
Works just fine in my '04.

Just a note of caution about using the shorter plug from the T5 model.
First, since the reach is about 1/4 shorter than the R specific plug, the threads of the splark plug don't go all the way into the spark plug hole in the cyclinder head leaving a significant portion of the threads exposed to the combustion process. The exposed threads will become contaminated with carbon and when an attempt to install the correct plug is made, you could run into difficulty and or possibly damage tothe threads.
Second, the heat range of the plug is determined by the spark plug insulator length that is exposed to combustion process. When the in****or is recessed up into the plug hole, this will effect this process ( reducing thermal conductivity) . More importanlty the spark plug is also designed to draw heat from the combustion event. This is called the "Thermal Performance" or more commonly "heat range". In this case where the plug is not able to properly conduct heat away for the combustion chamber and into the cooling system, it could exacerbate an already weak area on the R. ( detonation under high ambinet loading)
Not sure how severe this could be in the case of the R, but I would advise against it as the correct plugs are readily avaialble and not much more.
