I read somewhere that Volvo traditionally never shared parts with other manufacturers, however I am wondering how much of Volvo is really Volvo and how much is Ford. One part of my XC70 is Ford, namely the lug nut opener (I do not know what the technical term is) is straight out of the Ford parts bin: it is stamped with the inscription "FoMoCo".
Has anyone noticed any other Ford parts on their car?
(unable to take a clearer picture)

Re: Part sharing with Ford (rovermark)

Of course there is part sharing. All Volvo modern 6-cyl engines are designed by Volvo but made on Ford's plants. So, many components would have FoMoCo stamp on them.
However, in general, it is a good thing as it gives Volvo access to quality parts at lower prices, because of large volumes at which those parts are purchased or produced.

I hear instead of the stamp FoMoCo it's going to be MoFoCo!

So that explains why I have ultra flimsy power window switches in my 09 V70. Maybe I should have asked for a MoFoCo discount when I bought my Ford, uh Volvo!

Re: Part sharing with Ford (comp1)

sorry to say but...
The new S80/V70/XC70 and XC60 are build on the same EUCD platform as the european Ford S-max/Galaxy/Mondeo and the Land Rover LR2.
So basically, everything under the body is labeled Ford. From the suspensions, brakes to the electrical wiring.
The 3.0T and 3.2N/A are build by Ford in UK. They are stamped FOMOCO on every single part of them.
The last true piece of Volvo you can buy today is the XC90 with a D5 diesel engine and a manual gearbox...

I drive both cars frequently enough to notice the difference if there would be any. And I went from 00 S80 to 08 S80.
The notion "ford is bad for Volvo" is very stale...

You know, Aston Martin DB9 has the exact same side rearview mirror as 04-06 S60. They're stamped "Volvo" too, so I guess we shouldn't feel that bad lol. I happened to came across one, looked at the rearview mirror and thought hmm.. looks familiar. Looked underneath the mirror, it says VOLVO!
The center display is also very similar to the S40/V50/C70 family.

Re: (djeremya)

At the end of the day, parts sharing isn't quite a bad thing after all. If every car had custom made parts for each and every component, the finished car would probably end up costing far more than what we can imagine...
But having said that... I do agree that when paying a price for a luxury car, I don't think anyone (including me) would like to see stamps of a so-called "mainstream" manufacturer on the parts of your car.

Re: (frontwheeldriven)

I remember reading one review of an Aston Martin where the finish of the key fob was wearing off and underneath it said Volvo and the reviewer being horrified. LOL.
BTW, the T6 engine has a HUGE FoMoCo on the VVT actuator. I took pics of it at the auto show back in the day....
