As I've been doing all my research the last couple days on what I want to customize and what I would change on the R, I've decided the 18" pegs are growing on me quickly. With limited choices for wheel alternatives, and risking ride quality by upsizing, i'm considering powdercoating the stock rims.
Being my R is Electric Silver, a nice metallic flake gray comes to mind. Almost pewter. I love black rims, but I think you really need a chrome lip on a silver car to pull it off.
I've had rims powdered before. Great durable solution. Anyone know of any other cars who have done paint or powder on stock rims? pics? Anyone PhotoShop gurus who could work it up off a pic to have a look-see?

Powdercoat can be done for about 75 dollars a wheel and is MUCH more durable than paint.

Re: Painted/Powdercoated rims? (Quick Brick)

Painting a wheel here in Minnesota costs around 100.00 each wheel. Powder coating is at least twice that. Also powdercoating weighs twice what a standard paint and clear would be.. I know the paint does not weigh much but adding any more weight to the already heavy peg's might not be a good thing. If you can powder coat each wheel under 150.00 each that would be a deal.

Best deal out there right now is Sniz's Iforged in the classified section.

Re: Painted/Powdercoated rims? (Mash)

MASH, you need more supply and demand in your area ... really . Powdercoating really is a simple and inexpensive process. As someone posted (depending on your localle it seems) it should actually be a CHEAPER option than paint.
Never heard about the weight thang ... can you quantify that with a number??? ... 2 times??? ... how much paint by mass does it typically take to cover a wheel ??? My guess up until you mentioned it is that the amount would be negligable. Maybe that extra thickness is what adds to the durability.

Re: Painted/Powdercoated rims? (Quick Brick)

The thickness is exactly what determines the weight. Powder coating has at times (depending on the application) 3 times thicker than a standard paint and clear. That is what makes the powder coating that much stronger. As far as numbers I once had a E46 M3 and powder coated one wheels first (225.00 each wheel)and then weighed it. Stock was 24 lbs (painted) and the powder coating was 25.5 lbs. In my case it was a 1.5 lbs increase in weight per corner. 6 lbs's total. Rolling weight ='s 3X that weight. Total rolling weight added was 18 lbs for the car.

I think the thing that makes powder coating so much more durable is the way it is applied and not the thickness.

Re: Painted/Powdercoated rims? (R_Rated)

I don't think I would paint wheels ever. I've seen some nice ones, but after time, just day to day driving chips them and they start to pit.
You can powder them in any color these days. I loved the black metal-flake powder I had on this set. Didn't protect them from getting bent when I hit a huge sinkhole at about 70mph.

I was really just hoping to see what the 18" pegs look like with a different color.

there is someone on here about 6 months ago in europe that his dad borrowed his V70R (I think it was a V) and scratched his son's wheel and knew that his son had been thinking about painting them so went ahead and did it. It looked good if I am remembering correctly.

I'll see if I can find someone to photoshop black and pewter powder on the Electric Silver.
I got my last set of 4 coated for $335. That's well worth it IMO.
