Finally got around to it and painted my grill bezel (surround?) and my FRP winglets from CFW. I had been waiting on the winglets for awhile, finally got them a couple weeks ago and then just found time and decent weather to paint. I went ahead and popped the grill in after 2 days of paint curing, but I'll wait at least a couple more days on the winglets since the paint is no doubt still a bit soft. The grill obviously requires much less handling to mount up!
Here's the first round of pics:

Grill removed

Primered the winglets, just scuff sanded and cleaned/taped the grill.

3 base coats and 1 clear at this point (did 3 + 3 total):

Grill installed - it's by far the cleanest part of the car now...

More to come when winglets are installed! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (imageomega)

!! I want to do the same thing to my grill, paint the surrounding trim black. Which paint did you use? Gloss, semi-gloss, etc.? Did you also do 3+3 on the grill?

I also wanted to black out the Volvo slash (since we can't remove it as it looks worse with the grill tabs for it sticking out), leaving only the R to stand out in shiny silver. No idea how to do that though

Looks nice. I painted my grill surround over a year ago. It's a much better look than the way it comes out of the factory.

Re: (05BruzaS60r)

I just painted my grill black a few weeks back, and it does so much for a black car. Nice work.

Re: (S60R1)

I bought PPG urethane high gloss automotive paint from http://www.carpaintonline.com. I was very pleased with the quality, consistancy, and finish, and their price was about the best around for what I was looking for. I bought a quart each of base, clear, and the appropriate hardener for just under $100.00 shipped. Here's the thread of discussion on that stuff.

I did not paint the eggcrate part of the grill at all. I just taped it off, leaving it the dark grey semi-gloss that it was from the factory; it provides a decent contrast from the black sapphire bezel, but not as much as I would have liked. If for some reason the paint doesn't hold up well, I will end up stripping or sanding and just paint the entire thing black sapphire. But for now, I'm fairly pleased with my results. Hopefully this weekend I will find time to get the winglets mounted up! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

As for painting the slash itself, that would be very easy - just sand off all the chrome, primer, and paint. The little black detail line running down the middle of each side looks like it can be removed easily from the back, too. The center emblem, however, would not look good painted since it is "encased" in clear plastic. You would either end up with that chrome emblem still standing out by itself, or painting it over to leave a big, plain, square...

I used a rattle can on mine after Scotch-Brite and some acetone wipes. Valspar Plastic spray paint works really well. Driveway job, too.

Re: (Forced5)

Did they have the right paint code for your car, or you just used plain ole' black?

Didn't someone mention the actual paint code for the sapphire black not too long ago? Or maybe I'm thinking of the center console repair job that was documented.

Re: (T5 for Life)

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I just got the winglets installed too. Here's a pic:

T5 for Life: I did use the Black Sapphire Metallic, and I believe the paint code was 452.

I am starting a new thread on the winglets. Check here http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=116361 if you're interested. Thanks again!
