so I'm planning on painting my headlight interior (the light grey part) matte black.
has anyone done this before?? seems that the plastic part is somewhat glued to the glass... and I'm not sure if I'm able to put it back together again
also, any thoughts on light loss because of painting it black? (I was thinking of matching the car color and going with red, but I'm quite certain this will look bollocks.)
and just for clicks :

Re: painted headlight interior? (crossie)

I've been tossing that idea around for awhile now too. I think it would look nice. Body fill the piece to get rid of all the texture to it, sand smooth, and paint. That would be hot.
I was just planning on buying spare headlight housings, and using those to do it. If it doesn't work out great, well, I've still got my stock ones on the car.

It's enough to take your headlights apart and just as easy to put them back together. Just pop off the 4 clips, get a heat gun and merm up the glue to seperate the 2 pieces. Paint then heat up the glue and press back together.
Oh, and I'd color match the headlights.

Painting the backing will not have an effect on your light output and it does look really good! Like the above posted, it's super easy to take the headlights apart, just take your time so you don't crack the lenses or melt the plastic. Prep work is key in doing this... make sure you mask off well ( I use Glad Press and Seal wrap ) and ensure the backing is completely free of moisture before resealing the lights so that they don't fog up later. Post pics once your lights are done!!

I probably will give it a try sometime next week... still not sure if I'm going to go with matte black or somehow custom-match the paint... matte black would be a lot easier
oh and jessica, this (having the light housing painted not affecting the light output) seems totally right don't know what I was thinking earlier... hehe

the only problem with that is, we don't get this kryptonite fusionreactor whatsoever over here in europe... at least not in germany.

I'd like to have something ... reversible... if the output sucks, I can still change the lights back to stock... hmm...
(solution would be another pair of headlights, but that'll be kinda pricey...)
Output isn't affected by the backing...just do a good job so you can keep it

IDK, how much heat neon lights put out vs. the headlights which put out a lot of heat? I'd still be a little worried about the heat from the headlights melting the vinyl. Go with paint and you'll have no problems.

Yeah, I'd go with paint over vinyl, but there are special vinyls that could take the heat just fine.

Headlights make a LOT of heat...burned myself on them after giving them a min or 2 to cool. Id be most worried about the adhesive sticking cuz it would SUCK to have to open it up again...

Ive gotten lenses apart by baking the head light in the oven around 200* for about 10-15 minutes or depending on your oven sometimes less. Usually can just peel them apart fairly easily.
As for the paint, what models come with light grey bezels other than the newer ones? Mine are already matte black

Re: (ForceFed Motorsports)

Mine are matte black as well. A few months back I had thought about color matching them, but since I am still waiting on deciding what color I am going on my car as well as need the money first I decided I would leave them alone, since the matte black might actually match the vehicle better after the paint job. We'll see.

I've painted headlights with Krylon Fusion before and have had no issues. If you're really worried about heat just get some of that high heat resistant paint.
