Greetings all -

I am needing to have my steering box rebuilt on my 1972 ES as it has apparently no adjustment options left . I have located a complete steering box unit out of a 1968 that I am considering having rebuilt (my rebuild guy does not wrench cars - only steering boxes) and then exchange the one in my car. Sounds complicated I know, but trust me its actually easier for me this way.

Anyway, the question: is anyone aware if the 1968 P1800 steering box is identical to the 1972 P1800 steering box or at the very least compatible and interchangeable? The Type Nr on the 1968 box is 7318955101 while the Type Nr on my 72 is 7318955112.

I have located a rebuild kit and bearing races (expensive!) but apparently the steering worm is no longer available.

Any/all insights are welcomed. Many thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if they are compatible but I have a clean pair of boxes from my 64 that I will sell cheap. I am going back with rack and pinion so I have no need for them.

Look at your '72 ES steering box mounting bolts - three or four?

Look at the '68 - 3 or 4?
