Hi all. I am seriously considering doing OSD for my first Volvo purchase. But I have an important question for those of you who have done OSD in the past. Specifically, I am curious about the price you paid for your Volvo using OSD.
For example, take these prices:
1. USA MSRP $40,000
2. OSD MSRP $37,000
________________________
3. USA Invoice $37,450
4. OSD Invoice $??,???
The questions:
* Which of the above (2, 4, or somewhere in between) did people pay for OSD?
* Is there somewhere that I can find the pricing for #4 (e.g., for BMWs its easy to find)?
* What does the dealer get for doing the OSD deal (i.e., which of the above prices is its profit based on)?
* Does anyone know if the current $4,500 "Volvo Allowance" applies to OSD?
Obviously, I would like to pay as little as possible -- and still have the dealer make some money -- so everyone is happy. But I need to know where to start the negotiations, assuming that such a thing exists with Volvo OSD.
I do know that for BMW's OSD version, folks have successfully obtained pricing of #4 above + $1,000. That seems like a good deal for everyone, as the dealer gets $1,000 for just filling out some paperwork, and the buyer gets a terrific deal.
Please let me know if you have any answers to the above. I really would like to do the Volvo OSD program (built the car online and everything) IF the price is right.
Thanks!!

Re: Overseas Delivery Program WHOLESALE Price (Zosia)

It is my understanding that there are not any other discounts for OSD purchases. Keep in mind that you do not pay the transportation charge (a savings of $700 or so) or any of the "document fees" that some dealers add on. My OSD charge included everything including plates and state inspection. It did not include sales tax, which I paid direct to the state.
Also, depending on your timing, the model you want, and the options you want, there are often other savings. In my case, I received the Premium Package (sun roof, leather seats, etc.) for $695 vs. a list price of $2495. All told, with the OSD savings, the package savings, the transportation charge, my savings added up to over 13% off the total sticker.
AND - I got a trip for two to Sweden!!!

I'm not sure if it still the case, but at one point, BMW made buyers pay the VAT tax (around 25%) up front, then refunded it when the car was shipped. That could be an issue depending on your cash flow.

In any event, I strongly suggest you work with one of the OSD professionals on this forum. I worked with Bob Kennedy from University Volvo, and others have spoken highly of their dealings with William at Lawrence Volvo.
You will find that these gentlemen know all the ins and outs of OSD, better than most local Volvo dealers. They also have the earliest knowledge of any OSD sales and promotions.

Re: Overseas Delivery Program WHOLESALE Price (BillFerg)

Thanks for the response. I recognize that it is a good deal, but I'm not really wanting to pay MSRP -- even OSD MSRP -- for any car.
So, if anyone knows, I'm trying to find out what the "Invoice" price is for OSD (I'm looking at a C70). It must exist, and I'd love to know it. In fact, since my first post I found a post on another forum where the buyer received $1,000 off OSD price. While this was not presented as "Invoice," it comes closer.
If you don't mind, could you let me know the timing of your purchase that got you the lower list on Premium package etc.? I have heard of this elsewhere, typically in June or July, when they are looking to start making the next year's model.
I would love to work with William or Bob, but unfortunately I'm in Los Angeles. If you know of a good OSD dealer here, please share.
Thanks again!

Re: Overseas Delivery Program WHOLESALE Price (Zosia)

As for the timing of my order, I ordered in December, 2006, and the promotion required pickup of the car by 3/31/07. This seems to repeat each year around that time, but there are no guarantees. Of course, with the way cars are selling, there are likely to be future OSD promotions.
As far as the MSRP issue, I understand you want to get the best price you can. The bulk of the OSD savings come from the transfer pricing between Volvo Car Corporation and Volvo Cars North America (VCNA). Normally, when a car is shipped to VCNA, there is a markup of around 7% to cover the cost of advertising, regional and zone offices, etc. This creates the sticker price you see at the dealer.
Under OSD, you buy the car direct from Volvo, not from VCNA. That's where the bulk of the savings comes from. I really don't know what "Invoice price" is for an OSD. I know that the dealership does not make the same profit level that they do from a VCNA car, so there may be less room to deal.
As for a local OSD salesperson, don't automatically rule out dealing with someone from a distance. I'm in Massachusetts, and Bob is in Charlotte. He handled it all by overnight mail, phone, and email. Bob also got me great financing and handled one small issue that came up with accessories I had ordered. By comparison, my local Volvo dealer was (and still is) an IDIOT when it comes to OSD. He couldn't handle financing, knew nothing about the sales promotions that were available, and did a disservice to the entire OSD program.

Thanks BillFerg! I will definitely get in touch with Bob in Charlotte. I was under the incorrect impression that you could only deliver to the dealer with whom you signed the OSD contract. If Bob did it for you (and I assume that you did not have to drive down to Charlotte to take delivery), that's great.
Best.

Re: Overseas Delivery Program WHOLESALE Price (Zosia)

OSD is not necessarily a way to save money, unless you want to buy a brand new vehicle AND get an experience out of it.
If economics was my thing this time around, I would not have bought a new OSD, but instead purchased a slightly used car.
For example, last week in Seattle, craigslist had several 2008 XC70 for sale at around $29,000 with LOW miles. I live in Anchorage, and easily would have flown down (hardly necessarily), and paid shipping up to Alaska and still would have gotten a better deal than at the local dealer.
I chose OSD because of wanting a European vacation, a unique experience, and once in my life buy a NEW car. Next time it might be a used Volvo for financial reasons.
Finally, don't be afraid of using any of the posters here who are dealing with OSD. My experience at the dealer was as can be expected, not bad, but not anything special. Next time I might go with someone who takes pride in the OSD program, like the "usual suspects" on this board.
freezingalaskan

I had a great experience with Bob handling my OSD and live 750 miles away. He will explain the pricing breakdown and find you every possible break.
Don't forget to join VCOA, and get that discount too!
Bill
I appreciate the kind words also.
From coast to coast...
Bob and I both are grateful to our many OSD customers throughout the US who have entrusted our services in the arrangement of a great European vacation with the purchase and pickup of a new Volvo thousands of miles from home.
William

My $0.02 (closer to $0.01 at the moment...):
1) I echo the previous post about Bob's help. He does a *great* job.
2) After I understood the pricing and what I'd get with OSD, I went to my local dealer and asked if they'd match or beat my cost, not including the trip to Sweden. They suggested that I do the OSD.
-cal

I appreciate all the help folks.
I did find out from Volvo that the current offer of $4,500 "Volvo Allowance" off a C70 does NOT carry over to the OSD Program.
However, there are a few "in stock" Volvos at the Gothenburg site that you can get for $5,500 off OSD list. And you get a second night free stay at the hotel.
If you are in the market for one of these, its a great deal!

Re: (Zosia)

MY 08 or 09 "In Stock" C70's? $5,500 off is a great buy! "In Stocks" are usually pre-loaded with most popular options.
My '08 "In Stock" C70 6 spd MT was pre-loaded with Premium & Climate Packages...and Metallic Paint (about $3,500 savings). I paid for Convenience Package and Bluetooth.
09's get 'free" Factory Scheduled Maintenance AND free Bluetooth ($650 savings). An extra night's stay at the Radisson SAS in GOT is also a great perk. We ended up staying an extra night in GOT on our own anyway - but Radisson is right in the heart of a very special city.
Had I known about the extra $500 VCOA OSD discounts - I would've joined much earlier (my 05 V50 was an OSD, too.)
