I know there is a post about tires already, but I am looking for a different kind of tire. I like to do a little off roading in my 240 (not mountain climbing but I like to drive over stuff) and I am looking for a beefier tire to throw on my stock 240 wheels. I am not looking for swampers or hard core rock crawlers, but I want a nice strong side wall, some deeper tread, and maybe something that will lift up my 240 a bit for some more ground clearance. Whats the largest and/or beefiest tire I can throw on stock 240 wheels (buying new wheels is out of the question, too much $$$).

Re: Other tire question (MenardVolvo)

Steven;
Your wagon can handle 205-75-14 tires ok. With a set of rear over-load springs and a good hunting dog you can venture deep into the woods.
Visit a local (established) independent tire shop and tell them your requirements as many options are available - some inexpensive.
George Dill

Re: Other tire question (MenardVolvo)

Steve,
I know of one all-terrain truck tire available in 195/75R14(oe replacement size). Its the Bridgestone Dueler A/T D693. It has a fairly aggressive off-road tread design and a "C" load rating. I don't know of anyone who has put them on a 245, but they would probably suit your needs quite nicely.

Modified by SL8Brick at 5:08 PM 3-16-2006

Re: Other tire question (MenardVolvo)

remember that beefier tires means it will sound like an airplane on the freeway. my dad had some mudslingers (i dont know what else to call them) on his f350 and on the freeway it sounded like a damn biplane was in the bed of the truck.
and you can buy "new" wheels. its $2.19 and its called "a can of paint." paint em black and put some gloss on em. you wont see brake dust (chromes enemy as i have discovered, again on the f350)

Re: Other tire question (MenardVolvo)

As a tip I just bought some KUMHO tires at Discount (Yokohamas were TWICE THE PRICE!!!).
I'm really impressed with the Kumho's. They are every bit as quiet, comnfortable and grippy as the Yokohamas I am used to and at $46 apiece, a heck of a bargain. And Discount's lifetime replacement / balance/ rotation / roadhazard deal was only $36 for the set!

Re: Other tire question (SL8Brick)

I am very unfamiliar with load ratings, I assume C is heavier than the tires I am using now, Goodyear Integrities. I haul a lot of stuff in my car, so a higher load rating is good.
Camyman: I was actually thinking of getting rid of my hubcaps and spraying the wheels with some rustoleum, have the wheels jet black (I hate how shiny wheels are these days. But, with how many curbs I run into/over I may leave them on for protection, so I do not whack the lugnuts. Also, anyone can feel free to let me know that spraying the wheels is a very bad idea, I just thought I would do it for fun, considering how fancy and dressed up my car is already.

nothing wrong with painting the wheels, just do it off the car to avoid getting overspray on the brakes.

Re: Other tire question (SL8Brick)

I have found the dueler, and I love the look and they sound like a good dependable tire. Anybody know of the cheapest place to look for tires? So far I have found $82 a peice.

I'm not sure if you can get ten.. more maybe.... ply tires in an approriate size for your car but they are really hard to beat for extreme use and really hard to destroy
I have 205/75's on my wagon and they do offer less rolling resistance than the 70's but installed only a wee bit taller than the stockers

Re: Other tire question (MenardVolvo)

Call this the stupidest question you ever heard, but if my current tires say 195-70-14. that means I have the 14inch rims right? which means I can not purchase a tire that is 205-75-15? When it comes to all the numbers and letters on tires, I am a blonde.

Re: Other tire question (Camyman)

Cool, thanks man. Though that kinda sux, cause there are few options for 14. Looks like my next investment, after the exhaust and tires (stupid state inspections) will be bigger wheels.
