<br>(Jim, sorry please move to Audio forum after initial time interval)<p>I recently upgraded my home audio system to a nice denon/polkaudio 5.1 combo with SACD and DVD-Audio capability. I am now hopelessly hooked on the high-fiedlity surround sound. What I used to think of as great sound in the R now seems a bit lacking. Especially when pulling compressed sound from the iPod.<p>What are the upgrade paths available to me for the R? I need a usable trunk so loading it up with 700 lbs of equipment is not an option.<p>Is there an iPod alternative that supports high-fidelity surround sound encodings like SACD?

the best option for this would be a preamp only HU. Clarion has had one as well as pioneer. Both in the 500-700 dollar range. Top-o-the line option would be Nahamichi (sp?) and for power look at Zapco or Audisson. To get the quality you are talking about for speaker you need to spend about 1200 bucks on some 3 ways for the doors.<p>I know what you meanas I have a Rotell/B&W setup at home. All biamped with preamps and dedictaed amps

what's a good online source for car-audiophile information or products, especially R-related? crutchfield seems kind of weak in this regard. can't find references to any of these items there that fit the R.

I have all Defenitive speakers in my home theater setup, but now it looks like dedicated amps to run those brutes is the way to go.

I use 4 802D's for the corners, a HTM4S for the center and another in the rear center.<p>I used to play music for a living and spent some time in the studio. I like to listen to good music on a quality system. There are definitely some better offerings than what I have but not that fit my budget

I have three 6.5" two-way MB Quarts for LF, Center, RF. Two MB 6.5" single mid-range drivers for LR/RR rear doors. 8"/1" Dynaudio two-ways for the rear shelf. Plus a 12" JL Audio sub. <p>Satellites amp'ed at 75W/channel. Sub at 500.

There is currently no way to "rip" multi-channel hi-def digital audio that I'm aware of -- either DVD-A or SACD. You need a DVD-A/SACD source unit.
