Has anyone ever heard of the Lotus Carlton? I heard that it was supposed to be some kind of fierce Ferrari eating beast with a dog of a sixth gear but with a top end of 170 or so in fifth. All in a four door sedan that didn't look too different from a SAAB 9000 Aero. Volvo's got a twin turbo six like the Lotus did, but it is not anywhere near as fast.

Yes, I do remember the car. It was Omega built. I have a back issue of AutoSport Magazine with an article on it I believe. It was a nice looking car, I think only built in black.
It was a byproduct of the former GM ownership of Lotus. It was wicked fast and RWD. I don't know details off hand, but if it's REALLY important I can go dig.
Lotus also did handling tuning on the last generation Isuzu Impulse and Stylus sedan and the Elan was fwd making use of an Isuzu turbocharged 4 banger.
I still can't figure out why GM sold Lotus, but the ties must still be okay, because Lotus is building the Opel Speedster, albeit with an Opel motor rather than the Rover unit that is in the Elise.

Actually, they didn't come in black, but 'Empire (Imperial?) Green,' which looks almost black. So many people thought they were black tho. There were approx 950 made of an original 1100 planned. Powered by a 3.6L I-6, twin blown (of course) making a reported 377 (Kai-beating ...) horsepower and 419 synchro-shredding ft-lb. of twist. Not bad, w/a 0-60 time of a bit over 5secs. and a 13.5sec 1/4! Man, of all the cars that 'could have been great...'
Dammed nice cars, imho, for around $60k US if you could find one.

Yes! Those were some bad-ass cars alright, and I think that only 950 cars were made. The interesting think about this car is that the engine was based on Aston-Martin design technology, using an Opel engine block.
It has taken more than a decade for Audi (RS), BMW (M), and Mercedes (AMG) to catch up to the performanace of this beast. If Lotus were to ever build their own sedan, it would destroy the competition IMHO. The 04' Maserati Quattroporte could just do that as well.
Check out this movie, it is a high speed chase on the E20 south of Mariestad Sweden. The Lotus Omega leaves the Saab 9-5 Turbo in the dust:
Swedish Cops vs. Lotus Carlton Omega (6.55MB)

-Drew

Any word on whether or not any of these things made it here to the good ole USofA? Wouldn't that be a treat to have on in Montana?

I'm not certain, but I don't think a single one made it to our side of the pond. Sigh, all the great cars are kept off our shores.

But the Carlton is a sedan, and built about 10 years ago, and is fairly rare, unlike a Mustang GT, no offense. Definitely it's not a car for everyone, and surely it's not a ponycar (thank goodness)
That vid clip is pretty neat too, imho. What were those Swedish cops using that it took so long to go from 120 to 200kph?
[This message has been edited by javadoc (edited 06-21-2002).]

I like the styling of it, it looks like it has a nice, aggressive stance, and it looks like a pretty good sleeper.
I just don't get this obsession of "my car's 4.8" o DAM! "mine's 5.1" you could kick my a$$... i mean, .3 of a second??? it's all in the shifting...
