Volvo Windows strikes again! I was driving back from vacation yesterday, doing spirited highway speeds, it was bone dry outside, around 8 PM, and the dash said the system was turned off because of blockage, and the right side light kept flashing on and off, until I turned it off manually. I tried it again every 10 minutes, and it still said it was blocked. When we got home, I checked it and it was totally clean, of course.
The next morning, when we drove the car, it seems to be working fine, so maybe a reboot of the computer's brain seems to have fixed it, just like the other bluetooth software bug I had which would resolve itself that way for a bit.
Don't know if it's worth mentioning it to the dealer. The other one time software bug I had about 6 months ago (which luckily has never showed up again) was the time when I opened the trunk, and it didn't go up by itself. I had to close it manually and re-try, and it worked.
So hopefully this is a one time thing too. I got the message once before, but it was raining and snowing outside a lot, and I figured maybe slush had somehow blocked some of the camera, but come to think of it, it did look clean when I stopped to see.

Re: Ooh! A new software bug! BLIS stopped working! (Lotus99)

Was it pitch black (no street lights or other vehicle lights) outside when you were driving?
Sometimes the BLIS cameras might interpret the lack of surrounding light as if the cameras have been blocked. And the camera that is blocked will have the light flashing rapidly to indicate to you which camera is blocked.

Had this happened several times, especially during sunset, sunrise, heavy rain, fogs and driving real close to road barriers (on those narrow streets).
I usually just turn it off and turn it on again after few minutes. There were twice when it would not reset itself while driving; had to wait when the engine was stopped later on.

Re: Ooh! A new software bug! BLIS stopped working! (frontwheeldriven)

I was on the highway around 7 to 8 PM, so there was a bit of natural light left still, and lots of cars around, so it wasn't pitch black. We had 2 lanes also, and there were no barriers on the right side.
I tried over at least a half hour period a few times turning the system on and off to get it to reset, but it didn't help until we had left the car overnight. I'm guessing it was a software glitch, which hopefully will remain a very rare occurence, but I'll be in at the dealer in a bit, and will have them look at it anyway to be safe.

Hey Lotus99,
Sorry to hear you're getting more troubles from your car. On my 08 XC70 the BLIS system would pull that trick on me all the time, just one of the issues that kept on cropping up and part of the reason that Volvo actually replaced my car with a new one (bear in mind I had MANY problems with the electronic systems though).
I would definitely mention it to the dealer next time your down there as they can replace and/or recalibrate the cameras that read your blind spot. Just out of interest - how have the other radar/camera (I'm thinking lane departure and adaptive cruise) systems worked?

The owners manual actually explains that when the vehicle is in a narrow area, this will set off the BLIS. There is a diagram of the camera angles, etc. so you can understand what the BLIS is "thinking". When I am in a garage situation, I usually turn it off as the flashing light is distracting.
