I came across this article while surfing for info on the XC90. It's a very positive review. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/
I found these 2 sentences very interesting: "The 272bhp T6 came with a 4-speed autobox and an ECU chipped to limit power in 1st & 2nd to avoid transmission damage. Soon this box will be replaced by a new, tougher 6-speed auto..."
Anyone else heard about this new transmission? Wonder if it's true & if so
1) How's it gonna fit if the current 5-speed doesn't &
2)When will it be available?

VW is putting a 6 speed auto in the Touareg, which I'm sure is out sourced; perhaps Getrag. Volvo has used VW sourced bits before, so maybe that's the source, and the delay is VW or whoever getting the production going.

This is good news to me, if it is true. I think I'll hold off getting an XC90 in the first model year and wait until 2004. Volvo should have ironed out initial launch bugs with the vehicle and a new tranny to boot would just be a great bonus.

That comment:
"The 272bhp T6 came with a 4-speed autobox and an ECU chipped to limit power in 1st and 2nd to avoid transmission damage. Soon this box will be replaced by a new, tougher 6-speed auto"
tells me the author either a) made it up, or b) released specific info that was supposed to remain under embargo. Not sure if he'll get any more royal treatment from Volvo...
Or... could it be part of the R variant that was mentioned elsewhere on the board?

Just an FYI for everyone, the revised 03' Jaguar S-Type is already now using the ZF Friedrichshafen AG 6-HP-26 6-speed automatic transmission. This is the same transmission that debuted on the E66 7-Series.
ZF says that this new 6-speed automatic transmissions is lighter, more compact, and more economical than their 5-speed version. It uses 30 percent fewer components than standard 5-speed automatic transmissions.
So it could be entirely possible that this will happen for the XC90 & S80 as this ZF unit will basically come from the Jaguar parts bin.
-Drew

Wow, that would be cool!
But would Volvo really 'borrow' a transmission from Jaguar, even tho both are now owned by Ford? Wouldn't they want to keep a separate brand identity?

My uncle has been a VW/Audi mechanic for about 20 yrs or so and when I saw him this summer, we talked about cars and he asked about the 940 we have and said that Volvo and VW used the same engine once. Is this true?

[This message has been edited by omega6_virus (edited 09-02-2002).]

But, since Ford already has ties with that particular ZF transmission & company, getting it would be that much easier IMHO.
In this case, brand identity wouldn't really play in any major factor because the transmission isn't built by Ford or Jaguar.
Many different companies source transmissions from the same place. BMW has been using GM transmissions for many years. I think that 99.9% of BMW owners have no clue that their cars are using GM tranmissions, but GM makes some of the best trannies in the world. As you know the T6 S80/XC90 use a GM 4-speed unit.
For example, IIRC Saab now uses the exact same transmission as Volvo does for the re-designed 9-5 and 9-3. It is an Aisin Warner 5-speed unit.
-Drew

And that the S/V40 is in many ways a Mitsubishi Charisma (co-developed, built in the same factory with many common parts).
It is impossible for a car manufacturer to make a profit without using parts from other companies. Volvo is forced to use parts from other companies for cost reasons. If Jaguar has a 6-speed box that will fit the T6, Volvo will most likely use it if it meet their quality criterias.
They may be produced on the same line but the S/V40s are not "in many ways a Mitusbishi Carisma"...They may have been developed at the same time and built at the same factory but they do not share "many common parts". All they share is a...FLOOR, not even their chassis. Just the SKELETAL part of their chassis which is less than a basic commonality.
On top of that, Volvo had to peform (over the years) at least 180 structural and cosmetic (mainly structural) changes in order to make what became the S/V40 pass their tests.
I have watched a 1-hr. videotape of how an S/V40 is made (out of a roll of sheetmetal) and a 45-minute tape of the same on the Carisma and even the narrator explains how different these cars are although they are rolled out of the same production line.
Yannis
