I just ot this issue this month I read the issue before but I just can't get over a few things I read. How the hell!! Can the Cadillac CTS beat the R ? They put the R in 7th place ! The saab aero was the only worse car. The Acura Tl Lexus g35 sedan and new 330 were top picks. Anyways.. The article said a few things I couldn't understand like that the R has a "On/Off switch" ? What are they talking about. The steering is lifeless? I heard that before but don't find that at all. It's not the best but not that bad. I know it was hot out for the test but they got some pathetic #'s for the R. They really made it look like crap!
saying that R stands for RISKY... F them!

Re: On Off Switch? Numb Steering? Car&Driver 2006 Comparison issue this month sai ... (MagoonR)

I though the engine mount did a lot to eliminate then On/Offness of the car... which I always thought it had... Reason is...
The when the turbo finally spools up, it causes a very rapid increase in power production, which causes the motor to shift quite a bit in the engine bay, and with a rubber bushing, it bounces back making the gain quirky and jerky, and it seems more all of a sudden than it actually is because of the motor flexing. After the motor mount, acceleration seem much smoother. I think the stock motor mount is a mistake

This month?
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=49771
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=52311
This article is OLD.
And not to resurrect a dead horse, but I'm sure the heat had something to do with the peakyness of the engine and a poor showing in the accel times.
And 4C is to blame for their suspension comments.
Not to mention the fact that it had $3,500 worth of body kit and Atacama which hurt the bottom line.
Josbro is right, I'm sure the engine mount doesn't help the on-off nature either.
Overall it got a bad shake, but I can't disagree with most of their comments.

Good point about the extras. For sure the heat was a issue. 110 will slow any car down. They should have a rematch in the winter lol

I think that the R impoves more than most cars after 3.5K mi. I bet most test occur before this point.
2. Professional drivers don't push 4C to it's limit, because they don't trust it (and maybe they shouldn't), but it might be able to do more than they allow
3. They often test in the heat!
Zigg... don't let it get you ya, man. You'll pull up next to a G35 or a TL or a 330, and set the record straight... and even if you don't... you know what your car can do, and that's what matters. That's why you don't own one of those other cars that everyone knows everything about already. I had a guy is a Celica GT-S ask me "What's that thing got, like 260?" I answered him with my right foot!
It's all good, brother! Let 'em talk. I love the 14.6, that's my favorite part!
 That one's on me! hehe

If the R can't make power in the heat, while the others can, I think it is more than fair to write about this. Also, why can't the R produce good power on 91 octane? Others can, including the Saab. To say C&D was unfair to Volvo is BS.
It might not be pleasant to read, but maybe somebody at Volvo will wake up and smell the octane.

I'll say it again, I never felt a car transform like the R does (or did, I don't know if they ALL do this) at 3.5k mi. Much more powerful, and that is how the car is today.. so THAT is what they should test... across the board. Other than that, the R was just not tested in it's optimum operating conditions... oh well. I don't care what C&D readers think, all that does is make me even more of a sleeper!

And add another $1k to the price.
BTW, the only other turbo car was the Saab, and it finished last.
$47k R is not going to win any comparisons vs. a $42k 330i. Never.
this article is OLD and we all hashed it over in the past.
they did the test in the HEAT. probably on 91 octane. The R had no chance.
all the car mags are so biased. you can't believe what you read. they purposefully add the "gotta have it" stuff so they can fudge the results so their favorite (biggest advertiser/$$$) wins....
if Volvo had taken out a 5 page million dollar spread that month, I PROMISE you it woudl have been tested on 93 octane, in COLD temps, and come in 2nd.

dont worry zigger...
the CTS may beat the R in a car magazine, but the R beat the CTS in the speed GT race

Welcome to last year. We've discussed this article to death already...and I mean, beat it with a big 'ole freakin' stick right until it took its last breath kinda death. It's almost like picking up a 1986 issue of [insert favorite autorag] and saying, "I can't believe they said that about the MR2".
-Eric

C&D has always been a thorn in the side of the manufacturers because they pretty much tell it like it is.
Remember the review of the Saturn Ion? Or maybe the long term test of the '86 Olds Toronado. GM was very PO'ed at C&D. GM certainly takes out a lot of ads in C&D.
Or how about the negative press C&D has given BMW over the Bangle designed cars and the idrive? According to what you are saying, C&D would never have dared challenge BWM in fair of loosing fancy ads. But yet they did. I applaud C&D for being more cutting edge. Motor Trend, at least prior to Angus taking over, seemed afraid to tell it like it is.
Except for the comments about the R badges, I think it was a fair test.
Besides, I doubt C&D is so familiar with the R to the point that it would know that 93 octane makes a difference.
It is really up to Volvo to design the car to produce decent results anywhere the car is sold. You shouldn't need to live in Fairbanks to get the best results.
Other articles on the R by C&D have been positive.
Besides, stupid of Volvo to supply a R with just about every option.

One of the major reasons why I'm not really interested in BMW's. Not the peepee issue, jsut that I'd feel like I'd have to wander around baahing with the rest of sheep who can't make up their own minds.
Sounds like a rant against BMW, but really what I can't stand is people who can't think for themselves. i.e. can't read a C&D article and think - whoa they really [email protected]#ked that one up! Next.

C&D doesn't like Volvos... EVER
They ALWAYS test in CA with 91 octane and in the summer at over 90 degrees, ALWAYS
And Zig. you're ALWAYS late to the game.

Why does it seem that some of the R owners in here are always trying to defend their purchase.

Is it just me?
