Okay, pedal project pooped ... so maybe you likey Steering Wheel mod, no???

... well too bad, because you guys don't get a vote this time
!

One of the things that has bugged me about this interior is the fact we have this nice strip of aluminum above the glovebox, and nothing to balance it out on the drivers side. Futhermore, I always thought there was a "line" of aluminum that went around the car (from the doors, to the glovebox, thru the centerstack, which is mostly aluminum, to the other doors) all kind of at the same height, just below the beltline. The drivers side is the only place that interupts the theme. Well, here is my fix ... just more tinkering really while waiting for some parts to show up:

... and see now, the aluminum line runs all the way across the front of dash:

... and me likey, so it stays

i agree. that IS cool. it especially looks good on the 05+ dash with the aluminum surround.

it wouldn't look as good on an 04 as our dash has less aluminum.

on your car, that is really nice. it looks OEM

if you add some Heico or Takspeed pedals - it would be PERFECT.

and some aluminum door pins.

Yeah. How do you do that?????

Wow, an outcry
... I figured I would post up a "how I did that" over Saturday morning coffee, but nooooo
.

You guys are gonna laugh, but I made this out of some new vinyl graphic film I had actually purchased for a home project (the fountain in my living room ... another long story about tinkering
). Anyway, this stuff is a DEAD RINGER for brushed aluminum. I attached 2 pics below in different lighting conditions so you can see how real it looks (very tough to photograph).

Anyway after some very careful cutting and fitting I was able to get the bottom "pads" done in about 4 tries each, and amazingly those little strips took about 8 tries each
.

This stuff looks so real because I think it is actually layered in real metal. It doesn't "stretch" like traditional graphic film, and you can permanently "bend" it VERY easily just by removing it from the backing. It doesn't do compound curves at ALL (it will only bend in one direction at a time) and is actually very ridgid.

I was really frustrated by this until I learned how to use it to my advantage. I "pre-curled" the little strips into a half-round before applying them. Until I did that, I couldn't get the edges to stay down
.

Also, using heat to stretch or cure it? ... ***BWAAAAAAMP*** (think gameshow sound when you get the answer wrong
) . It seperates the clear top coat from the metal and makes it alll curly and white
. Besides, unless I used a blowtorch, this stuff ain't stretching.

... and before you all ask me where I got the stuff ... I got it on EBay
.

Haha, well I may have another little pedal project in the works before I give up on my own "tinkered" version. This would involve the actual PURCHASE OF NEW PARTS as a base as opposed to the best thing I could find in the "bin"
. I do have some other things in the works I will need to finish before my next valiant effort though

I wonder how this would look if applied to the black "spaceball" surround on the '04 models? It would be nice to get rid of the unsightly white-print shift map. Hmmm....

Quick Brick, perhaps you'd like to sell off excess portions of that roll? Was it expensive? I'm heading to eBay after I submit this post.

Holy Crap Batman, that rocks! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif If you are down in Florida in the next two years, bring some of that and I'll buy you dinner!

If they have to pull apart my dash to find the dash rattle in Florida, I'm seriously thinking about having my vent surrounds painted silver to match spaceball and door handles.

'04 dash could use a little more sprucing up IMO.

I have PM'ed several ppl about material who have asked. Here is my seller ... and look at all the crazy films he has up for sale!

I will caution everybody about working with this stuff ... like I said, it actually has metal content. I don't think anyone making a first attempt at a part will come up with something looking like it came off the OEM shelf straight away.

However, with a little patience, and some time, you CAN come up with some really high quality looking mods that cost nearly nothing. Enjoy

BTW, if I am ever lucky enough to be in Florida ... hopefully it's winter, and of course you can buy me dinner

Man, you crack me up.
That looks amazing! Would you ever think of marketing that?
You understand that your tinkering is better and more down to earth that what most vendors are offering?
That is one reason I liked Takspeed's stuff. It's down to earth custom products. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Thanx Eric_H ... and yes needsdecaf, that is the stuff ... I used the "fine brush" grade. It is a perfect match to our interior material both in fineness of brush and color .... amazing. The only difference is in gloss. The film is slightly more glossy than our trim.

In a real life application, I highly doubt anyone will notice any difference.
