My run in with a Volvo V70 2001 did not work out well yesterday. It ended up having major mechanical problems and I passed up the deal.
What should I get? I really need a good station wagon that's reasonably reliable and can be comfortable for long trips. I don't have a lot of money available right now ($8000 is my budget on this).
Is a 2001 still viable if it has a new transmission in it? What about earlier or later years? Looking for your expert advice.

Re: OK That didn't work out---what should I get? (petero1ks40)

For P2 Volvos (2001+ V70/XC70), aim for an '03 or later so you get one with the kinks worked out and the latest and greatest hardware. I think you were talking XC70 before, and 03+ got the Haldex AWD, which is less sensitive to tire wear variations than the earlier VC system.
An '01 with a manual transmission would be good to go (not available in XC70 or V70AWD trim, but can be found in a FWD V70 with NA or T5 engine). An '01 automatic with a new transmission and the "stop neutral" software delete should also be ready to go; just plan on following the SS advised 30k drain and fill interval for ATF.
I don't have much experience with the earlier model V70s (98-2000), but these may be options as well. Someone else will have to chime in there.
Audis are smaller and have a poor reliability reputation. Subarus have good reliability reputations, but my MY00 Legacy was in the shop too much for me to recommend one. Don't have enough experience with the Saab 9-5 Aero wagon to vote pro or con, but it could be an option, too.
