BTW, where do I buy the factory manual, I know this is a Volvo and there is some lame 1-800 number to call to get one, like why is is so hard to stock them at the dealer? Anyway, looks like to change the clutch the engine and trans both have to come out. No wonder this is a $2200.00 dollar job at the dealer.

Re: OK, looks like the engine and trans gota come out in one piece (slo-vo)

hey, so the clutch blows up the first time I lightly drag race the car, and I gotta pull the engine out to get the clutch out, first time since the 60s I think that was a MGB or Spitfire that I had to do the same. I figure if I return the new clutch now, suck up the loss for my BSR, and trade it in on a Acura TL, I'd be better off and the wife would be so happy.

This VADIS CD-ROM they sell on eBay is not too bad.....I stil can't find the wiring diagrams, but I know they are in there somewhere. There is a ton of info on it.
Yeah- looking at the clutch replacement procedure.....looks like you can "just" drop the driver's side subframe and pull the tranny out through the wheelwell. Only slightly easier than taking the entire engine & tranny out. Sorry- don't have a scanner to PDF the instructions.
Transversely mounted motors suck when it comes to stuff like this. Damn- now you have me scared the clutch won't last long with a BSR chip.

yeah I looked at the subfarme too, either way it is a butt kicker. Thanks for looking, I'll drop the subframe, good thing I picked up the light aluminum jack to go racing cause I need that one too.... maybe one more too... dunno yet.

Clutches have been huge jobs in Volvos ever since the 850. You might feel better to know that it's an even bigger job with AWD!
You don't want to remove the engine, but you do need to lift it slightly to loosen the subframe and remove the lower engine mounts. Once you get at it all, the job is relatively straightforward. The trans/diff assembly comes out toward the wheel well and down.
Tom.

Re: OK, looks like the engine and trans gota come out in one piece (tmtalpey)

done, I needed to take off the steering, swaybar to drop the subframe, oh and 02 wire and down pipe rubbers.
It is a DMF, if you don't know, don't find out cause all DMF suck.... The clutch cover is 6 bolts it is the same clutch spec uses for the S60R. I had a VR6 cover hanging around and gee looks the same, so I bolt it on, it is the SAME, did not try the disk but I bet that's the same too, except the VR6 performance setup cost 1/3 as much and it did come with a pilot shaft guide and a throw out bearing while my spec did not even though it is on the picture of their "kit".....
The Vovlo cover has some soft of stop or round bracket for the disk to ride on don't really know what it is for, maybe a stop for the internal slave, yes internal slaves also suck big time...

Re: OK, looks like the engine and trans gota come out in one piece (slo-vo)

I got about 10,000 easy miles on my T5, a few street fights from a roll, I did about 10 practice launches but this is all design NOT to spin the tires much. We're not talking childlike 5,000 RPM light them up. At the drags, I did a little water burn out cause the tires had mud on them from the red neck track, two dry launches to get a little heat, and by the first 1/4 mile the clutch was burnt up.... Any other car with a clutch like this? Yes my VW... in fact it was made by the same company LuK and it all bolts up...
I'll put the part numbers down, the cover, shows heating, the flywheel is less so. I got a new flywheel for the install as a DFM can't be resurfaced, I won't tell you guys how much as I don't want to FREAK you out.
The clutch itself looks to be strong enough, I'll get the part numbers tonight.

Re: OK, looks like the engine and trans gota come out in one piece (al_zoni)

Oldman might have gotten that price from me. My car is currently in the shop for a clutch replacement and the cost is $2200. Once I get the car back, it's getting traded in for something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to replace the clutch.

Re: OK, looks like the engine and trans gota come out in one piece (MarvynDT)

I hope that Volvo either did it for free or gave you a spanking deal. Were you ever aggresive with your car? I mean for mean 10 mild burn outs is well within the realm of expecting the clutch to last. I raced my GS-R for like 3 years both drag and autoX with the stock clutch, I only changed it when I went turbo.

You guys are giving me real doubts about my decision to get a V50 6 speed, if the clutch won't last through the warranty period.
The SSS issue doesn't inspire confidence in my decision either

Although, some folks here seem to be pushing them a lot harder than usual. If it's the same clutch as the heavier and torquier S60R, I wonder what's going on because this sure isn't an issue over in the R forum.
Tom.

Re: OK, looks like the engine and trans gota come out in one piece (tmtalpey)

my thoughts too, maybe a sticky internal slave, the plate might be much lighter dunno.... please check on the part numbers to see the differences. My clutch is a solid hub yet their picture shows a sprung hub, hop the dmf picks up the slack, I hate solid hubs street or race.
Well the trans is in, I just got a boat load of parts to put back on / in..
