Ever wonder what's inside that black box under your intake manifold? ....Well, not much:

Top half

Bottom Half

Top half in half (quarter?)

Re: Oil trap dissected... (AthruC)

I just picked up a new one of these at BVV today, along with the PVC tubing. Can't wait to get this splooged on part changed out to a fresh one.

Re: (SHIFT_S60R)

66k miles... still looks good (to me), besides the jizz

The only reason I swapped it is b/c my car was consuming quite a bit of oil , thought it was clogged PCV system...but turned out it wasn't. I had the new part already, so swapped it anyway while I had my TB off to be cleaned.

He really swapped it out because:

OMG! I pissed my pants when I saw this! Ever see Robot Chicken poking fun at star wars, the Admiral Akbar cereal commercial...he yells that!

Side note, I know where this thing is located but still can't see it without removing pieces. It's under the cover over the intake manifold/injector rail. I'm going to try to replace it today if I have time.

Rushin_max: What brand and weight of motor oil have you been running?

I just got the car, so I barely changed it last week w/ castrol 0-30. Seems like it's not burning oil anymore, but too early to tell. Don't know what it had previously (cooking oil?), but I had to add about a quart per 1K miles.

Re: Oil trap dissected... (rushin_max)

All oils are going to have some blow off. I was just curious if any conclusions could be made about synthetic versus conventional oil build up in the trap, but since you don't know the history, that's not possible. It would also be very dependent on the operating conditions, too; so, in hindsight, probably not something easily assessed.

Given the location of the trap and the difficulty replacing or cleaning it, it would have been nice to know if one type of oil significantly reduced buildup.

Are you getting any smoke on start up, acceleration, what does your tailpipe look like? Any excessive soot?

If your rings or valve seals are leaking, switching oils is not going to stop it--unless you go to a much thicker oil and never drive it long enough for the oil to thoroughly heat up and thin out...
