as long as your car isn't advising that you stop the engine immediately, i advise you to drive it to the dealer ASAP and have it looked at.
oil pressure & level is not something you want to screw with!

Re: Oil level low message??? (pizzapizza)

That's odd. Mine just came on last week. No drips on the floor or on the engine. I've got an appointment scheduled to take mine in.

R have sensitive reservoirs! the other day it was telling me to stop immedately due to low coolant ( that's with the RED triangle showing) and found out coolant reservoir is only 1/2 inch below FULL line.
filled it with distilled water.. and it's okay again.

sensitive is a good thing IMO...I wouldn't want a "lenient" sensor, so to speak.
Best to err on the side of caution

The R oil sensor not only measures level but it also effected oil quality (impurities)....
It does this by measuring the resistance between 2 coaxial tubes.

Does it use the same sensor for both quality and level? (ie, resistance for quality, capacitance for level... If so, it is considerably less sophisticated than the present standard in this area, and I'm not sure I would rely on it.

The sensor on my 2005 V70R is made by TEMIC, a Hungarian company. It is capable of both level and quality.
I have never convinced myself that the QUALITY portion of the sensor is actually in use for the US market, or any other for that matter. Sounds like Jim may have some more info on it.
The TEMIC part number is 25571463A1
Volvo part number is 8658263
It looks to be a 3 wire device however I have no data sheet on it.

What kind of oil? I have found that mine is much more sensitive to Synthetic. Low oil will come on when it is in the lower part of the safe zone.
