Oil Consumption Test Results - It's Burning Oil - MY2013 S60 T5 FWD

Dealership completed the oil consumption test this morning on my CPO 2013 S60 T5 FWD. It was 1.5 quarts low after driving for 2K miles. The dealership is replacing the piston rings per Volvo Cars USA - under warranty. I'm at 49,290 miles and still under the CPO warranty. Car should be ready next Tuesday. I was given a loaner - 2019 S60, which is REALLY NICE.

I check the oil every 2-3 weeks, and noticed the consumption several months ago. I pointed it out to the dealership. They topped off the oil, and we started the 2K miles consumption test at that time.

I'd like to hear from anyone that's had the ring job done. Was the ring job successful in eliminating the oil consumption, or did they have to go further (piston job, replace engine)?

Rings only done about a year ago. I check level every 6-8 weeks, not dropped since then. Due to have oil changed soon. Maybe 7-8K miles since then. Good luck.

Volvo had serious issues on their ring design. I believe these issues were finally corrected in 2016....Lot of 15, 15.5 and I BELIEVE early 2016s affected.

Rings usually solve the issue, unless the engine was scored. Then its a new engine. Tech would have checked for scoring when looking at pistons. So chances are you are 99.9% fine thereafter.

Good thing you had the CPO.....Though, I'm strongly suspecting that as more people run across this issue, there might start being a class action if Volvo doesn't goodwill people.

That info pertains to the Drive-E. This should be a B5254T12.
Correct...Did Volvo had an issue with 2012 / 2013s burning oil? If I recall, there have been quite a few threads on here regarding these vehicles, with the issue being rings, too?

Ring replacement job was completed yesterday, 5/28, as promised. The job was done under TSJ #34588, "High Oil Consumption, Engine 61".

At what consumption rate does volvo authorize and begin the " test" , for the 2012 s60, t5. I'm 2600 miles since my last oil change ( i do it, out of warranty) and roughly half a quart down. I did purchase the car used from a volvo dealer, currently at 54,700 miles.

At 1/2 a quart every 2600 miles I don't think you need to worry. This is considered normal.
Since it's out of warranty I'd just keep an eye on the oil and check it every couple of weeks.

i've been keeping track ever since i've heard about this issue and have read every post on it. I just can't recall, or if it's been mentioned,at what point does volvo allow the evaluation to begin. maybe tech can chime in....
and it may be " normal" today, but not in my book......my chevy v8's never did this, neither does my camry.

We begin an oil consumption test when a car comes in with a low oil warning light and there isn't another obvious explanation (like an oil leak or being overdue for an oil change).

ok....so..I have to let the oil level drop to the warning point, which means extending my change interval to the factory 7,000, 8,000 mile interval or whenever the warning light come on.
so, what's the amount of oil left in the crankcase when the low level light comes on.....One quart low?

also, i wonder what the percentage of 2012 t5's have developed this problem....if some don't, why not ?

No low oil warning light came on with mine. I check the oil level and tire pressure every 2 to 3 weeks. When I noticed the oil level getting lower, I scheduled an appointment with the dealership. After checking for, and finding no leaks, they topped off the oil to the MAX line, and started the 2K Oil Consumption Test. At the end of the 2K, it was 1.5 quarts low, and NO warning light had come on.

i guess i have to wait and see as mine appears to be 1/2 qt. per 2600 miles, that's assuming the middle of the hash marks on the dipstick is 1/2 a qt. i've already replaced the pcv.

Should we do this job as a pre-caution or wait until the symptoms shows up?
I would love if Volvo would create re-call and make the replacement.

Off topic from thread...did your 2012 get new rings and if so has there been less oil consumption, thanks

Mine got new rings at 43K miles. Covered under warranty. No consumption test was done, a little dealer push back but otherwise good dealer experience.
I'm now at 79K miles. It is using oil. I tried to quantify it but need to do a more accurate measurement. Maybe a quart every 1400 miles. I changed the oil a couple of weeks ago and filled it to one hashtag below full. Will track it in the next few weeks.
I'm not concerned at this point since I check the oil regularly and am not interested in going through the trouble and expense. I mentioned it to my Volvo specialist and he did not seem too concerned to suggest we do any work.
