Here is a report on the oil from my S40 after 2800 miles. The signs all show very low wear on it, which surprised me.
I am still probably going to switch to synthetic and maintain a 3000-4000 mile oil change interval, but the moral of the story is that for average drivers, regular dino at 7500 mile intervals is probably fine.

Wow! Very interesting.
If you don't mind me asking, what is the procedure for getting an oil sample from that lab? What is the lab's turnaround time? Also, how much does it cost?
Thanks,
-ema

The reports come from Blackstone Labs. It's pretty cool, you request a kit from them for free, which is a bottle you can mail. when you change the oil, just fill the bottle with the sample and mail it.
it's $18.50 per oil sample, which is worth it to me (I rationalize it that when I change my oil myself and order a test, it STILL is cheaper than having the dealer do the oil change, plus I can make sure the filter cartridge gets changed every time too). The reports take about 2 weeks to get done.
here's a link to their web page.
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/
