I know these forums are for anal owners to complain about everything and nothing.
Some of these moans that I've read over the past year or so are almost amusing.
1 - R key fob. It's too big, it opens in my pocket
Personally I think it is really cool. I wonder if VW and Audi owners pi$$ and moan about this as well. I much prefer the folding key.
2 - So-n-so car is .3 seconds quicker to 60 MPH (the latest is shame on Volvo for the brand new Mazdaspeed 6 being a hair faster). There is always going to be someone quicker. Who cares. Why didn't you buy an STi if you were so damned concerned with your drag times
Better yet, why not get a '78 Camaro and build that small block 350 so powerful and stout you could drag race John Force's top fuel dragster.
3 - headlights might as well be replaced by a flashlight Take 2 damn minutes out of your evening to adjust them. They are actually fairly decent. Get into any late model GM truck and I will show you cruddy headlights
Or do like R Kelly and put the Euro lights on. Too bad it cost a small fortune to do it now.
4 - It's slow off line It's a turbo engine. Did you NOT know this coming in Besides, have you driven most variable cam Japanese cars, esp. Hondas? The R seems like it has Corvette-like torque in comparison.
5 - M3 this S4 that. Those cars cost on the average $10k more. Nuff said
6 - The radio display is ugly Maybe you'd be happier in that Ford Focus with the prettier radio display
7 - The leather wears too easy. OK, this one is border line legit, but it is damn soft leather. Treat it often and it should be fine. It is the softest leather I've had the pleasure of sitting on in a carIn fact the seats in the XC70 I drove recently didn't seem remotely as nice.
8 - Bad gas mileage Really, how many 300 HP cars get much better gas mileage? Not even the smaller and lighter STi does better from what I've read You want crappy gas mileage? Do some city driving in my SUV. The R is practically a Jetta Diesel in comparison.
9 - Stereo sucks, Barry Manilow's Mandy sounds flat I really don't understand this one. I really don't. I must admit my Ipod setup has some feedback, but I think the stereo is great. Much better than the Bose system in my former Acura. A little better than the Bose system in my current Denali (which is supposedly GM's top stereo system).
10 - Clicking and clunking sounds. Somewhat legit complaint, but my former Saab made more noises than a bunny ranch in Nevada. My Acura also made sounds, mostly from the drivers seat that sounded like a family of mice had moved in.
Of course there are several legit complaints, but I just wanted to highlight some of the ones I think are pretty silly.
I could probably think of more...

Hehe...I agree with your rants/points
Although I've never heard anyone complain about the gas mileage. I think anything above 20 mpg avg is great! Of course those getting below that are either 1) drive in traffic 90% of the time, 2) never take the freeways, or 3) are mashing the gas like they stole it.

Re: Ohh those whines (flybynight)

In 2004 I posted the following about my 2004 S60 NA:

Quote, originally posted by BrunoS »

After driving my new 2004 S60 for 4000 miles I am very pleased with the car and believe it was a great buy. Of course I have found some things I don’t like and in most cases the problem is a design flaw rather than a quality problem.
Here are some improvements that the S60 would benefit from:
-Fog lights on/off switch
My car came with fog lights and every time I shut off the car they reset to off. If I was driving the car with them on, I would like them to stay in the on position for the next time I drive the car at night.
-Doors lock when driving as default
I know that this can be changed at the dealer but why it is not the default option. I haven’t heard a single good reason as to why this setting shouldn’t be the default option. I believe most people would prefer the doors locking when driving away.
-Gas tank lock button
Why does it have a button to open the gas tank door? Why not make it work like the trunk (If the doors are unlocked the trunk can be opened). Have you ever stepped out of the car, go around to the pump and then returned to the driver side because you forgot to open the gas door? It just seems to me that it would be better if you could open it with remote.
-Sun visor
Not a problem but they are somewhat flimsy, more so at the elbow.
-Cruise button
In my base (no navigation) S60 the cruise button is located on the left side of the steering wheel. It is about 1 inch in length and says CRUISE in the middle of the button. Other S60s have two buttons instead of just one at this location. Two buttons may be required to perform additional functions the base model does not have. But because the steering wheel was designed to have two buttons instead of one long button, it does not work properly. Try depressing the button by putting your finger to the left of the CRUISE label or right on top of the label. It does not work. You have to depress the button to the right of the label for it to work.
-Sunroof noise
The sunroof should have a wind deflector. Because of the noise it is very uncomfortable to drive the car faster than 40 mph with the sunroof open. My previous car had a small wind deflector that would pop out after opening the sunroof a couple of inches. The deflector was not visible when the sunroof was closed. Its mechanism was very simple and shouldn’t be a costly addition to a “near-luxury” sedan.
-Speedometer gauge numbers
The car is limited to 130 but the speedometer reads 160. (The R uses a different panel with blue gages so no excuse that is a common part for all the line). To be able to get to 160 the numbers increase by 20 mph (20-40-60-80) with lines every 2.5 mph. I find it difficult to read . I am sure most people would prefer 10 mph increments and more space between the lines. There is plenty of room to do this if the speedo would only go to 130.
-Gas tank overflows
The gas tank overflows quite frequently . I am still trying to find the cause and solution. I have read the posts of other members about this issue and will start paying attention to the type of nozzle I’m using when it overflows.

Hopefully someone from Volvo will read this and improve the S60 in its next redesign, maybe 2006?

This time I am preparing 10 page "whine" report about the R. It will include pictures and some technical drawings.
BTW For 2006, Volvo did correct some of the issues I had mentioned. The sunvisors have a new design, the sunroof has a spoiler and the fuel tank cap was replaced by a new design.

And it's not faster by a hair but a whole 3 seconds around a lap. 3 seconds around a lap is pretty substantial. Basically it says that the R isn't as fast or handles as well. Volvo advertised this as a "pure sports car" in their promo video and for it to be outperformed by it's less expensive, less horsepower and torque coroporate relative is just sad IMHO. Looking back, I think I should have gotten a STI.

Pre-2006 R's bog down when you try to launch thanks to the slow power transfer to the rear by Haldex. Evolve was going to come out with something to fix that and guess what? Volvo stopped them from marketing it probably because they knew in 2006 they were going to add a new feature - that pre-torque thingie. Don't forget the fact that any temperature above 70 degrees saps the power from this car and that it supposedly runs like crap on 91 octane. Should be non-issues for a $40k halo performance car don't you think? And don't even get me started on 4C.
Re: Ohh those whines (flybynight)

Look, we all complain about certain things with our cars. We all wish that they were perfect but they're not. The point of this forum is to have a discussion about things that we have noticed/feel liking talking about. If the things here are that bothersome, then don't bother looking at the posts!
