I've been trying to get a better idea on what I should be spending to repair my 98 S70. I've started 2 other threads and can't seem to get across what it is I need fixed. As I understand at the opposite end of where the 5 pipes start, and I don't know what this part is called, the part* is cracked, laced metal is unwound and not connected.

I've been quoted $1000 + to repair to $250 to $300 to weld back on.

My thoughts are this if I'm gonna spend $250 to $300 wouldn't I be better served buying a whole exhaust manifold? If so should I be purchasing a whole kit similar to the link below? or buying from a salvage yard, eBay etc;

If I do buy from salvage, used parts store etc should I definitely buy new gaskets & bolts to replace the existing?

(on any of the pictures in above link it's the piece with the laced metal)

By your discription of metal lacing, I'd have to say that your issue is not with the exhaust manifold, but rather with the down pipe. The Downpipe bolts up to the Turbo outlet, or it interfaces with the exhaust manifold if you do not have a turbo. All of the repair pricing sound steep. Investigate a new or salvaged downpipe that has the flex portion of the pipe intact. (thats the laced metal).

Rsterns,

Thanks for reply and clarafication on what the part is I was trying to explain, I do not have a turbo. Might you be able to point me on line where one can find a "flex pipe"?

Need a bit more info to help you, Year and model please, auto or Manual transmission , etc. Didn't look for your other threads.....
1998 S70 base, 4 speed auto, I found this thread* on another Volvo forum and this is exactly what's going on with mine. The reason I kept using the term Exhaust manifold is that was what I told by mechanic.

Thanks so much for shedding light on what I actually need to have done, I hope this helps to clarify what my situation is.

By the looks in the parts diagram, (I have to apologize haven’t worked on many non turbo), that the flex section is actually part of the exhaust manifold and not the downpipe as it is on turbo models. Number 1 in the diagram is the part you need.
