Anyone ever experience a noise that sounds like an intermittent "weeeeeet"? My girlfriend's S40 SE makes that noise at idle and low speed. It sounds like it's coming from the engine compartment or under the car.
pyaap- Why would the turbo be spooling up at idle?
Duhey2- Does it get louder when you turn the wheel? I had a power stearing pump that would make wierd noise like that when I would turn the wheel at low speeds and when stoped.

I think I know the sound your talking of. It sounds like an electric pump. I'm not sure what it is, but it makes the sound when you first start the car in the morning and move it, once the car is warmed up it goes away. Sounds normal to me, or should I say, it makes the noise, car runs fine, so it doesnt bother me.

Carlos
2001 Volvo S40 "Volvo for Life"
hi!
there are times that i'll hear what sounds like a brief little high-pitched 'Servo' noise; usually when i first start up. (after that, i don't usually hear it again,... maybe the stereo, sunroof, and road noises take over,...) i've also heard it when first enabling the Speed Control at low speeds. i just figured that it was the Climate Control system playing with the vents and such.
could that be what she's talking about?
congrats on the SE; now we just need to locate the other 998,... ;-)

cheers!
e

I'm actually in the Galleria (and a true-blue SnAAB) but she's NW. I actually drive my 96 900S the VAST majority of the time so we never take her car, but the next opportunity, I'm paying closer attention as to the source of the noise. Other than that, I love her car and would actually consider defecting from SAAB to Volvo. She got hers at Momentum.
Ernest, no kidding. The SE is a sweet all around. My gf is not thrilled with the color, but I actually like charcoal grey (err, Titanium Grey). I also love the interior.
[This message has been edited by Duhey2 (edited 06-27-2001).]
Awesome, Momentum is the dealership i'm working with now. We put the S40 on their test track and Armando thought the suspension was set up pretty good ( and it wasn't even complete at the time!!!)
Perhaps she'll see the S40 there sometime, we're trying to get it into the showroom for display!

Carlos
2001 Volvo S40 "Volvo for life"
I hear that same noise also, usually when pulling into my garage or into parking spaces. I figured it was something to do with the brakes (maybe a pressure regulator?), as I only hear it when I'm using the brakes at low speeds. It's done it since new, so I guess it's just part of the car's "charm".
I have noticed that the noise occurs when you release the brake pedal. This leads me to agree with the pressure regulator idea. I have noticed it since day 1 with the car, so I am not worried about it.
The noise is coming from the power brake servo or so the dealer told me, it happens only when the brakes are applied and only when in gear (I have an automatic transmission, I don't know how it is with manual). We can't hardly call this a "feature" but we'll just have to live with it . . .
Brakes it is! It took me FOREVER to figure out what that sound was. It was driving me nuts.
Here's how you can prove it to yourself: With the car running and in gear, sit quietly at a stop. With your foot on the brake JUST hard enough to hold it down, be still and pay attention... you'll feel the brake pedal pumping lightly in time with the "weeeeeet" sound you hear.
Weird, isn't it? I haven't figured out how this is a useful thing, but it IS good to hear other people's S40s do that.

To be honest, we have only had ONE customer who told us that this noise bothered her a lot.
And it only happens when the car is not moving or moving at an extremely slow speed while you are pushing the brake pedal.

Yannis
