VOLVO OCEAN RACE

The 2008-09 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race started in Alicante, Spain on 11 October 2008 and is scheduled to finish in St. Petersburg on 20 June 2009, following a 37,000 nautical mile lap of the planet. For the first time, the race is visiting Asia, with stopovers in Cochin, India, Singapore, and Qingdao, China.

For every race, there is a Volvo Ocean Race edition of cars. This year's edition is available for the Volvo XC90, Volvo XC70 and V70. These cars come in either Ocean Blue or Electric Silver, with interiors full of details that are inspired by the race and the nautical world. Sales of the Volvo Ocean Race edition cars are expected to reach 8,500 units.

As a side note, the Ocean Race itself is in the U.S. right now.
Re: Ocean Race (Kaizai)

The decision can always change, but I do not believe there will be an Ocean Race variant offered in the US. Previous versions never sold to the expected potential.

You are correct. For the 2009 and 2010 Model Year there are no Ocean Race special edition Volvo models for the US.

I always thought the Ocean Race Editions were neat. I can't imagine they cost Volvo much extra to produce. Paint is paint, and the changes were variations not additions. And it was a nice looking blue. But you had to be a Volvo Insider to know about them. They were a well kept secret even by VCNA standards.

I have been following with interest the thread on why Audi does well, and Volvo does less well. I have a new theory. The people at VCNA hate their jobs, and they have decided that if Volvo sales in NA get low enough they won't have to come in any more.
Re: Ocean Race (Sausca)

The Ocean Race cars sold very poorly, that is why they aren't here now.
Nothing to do with people hating their jobs.

Dealers just don't want to stock what they can't sell.

Re: Ocean Race (VolvoMax)

Max, I remember when Carl Reinhart was running Wells-Fargo. They decided personal banking paid more than corporate banking, so they dropped corporate banking, then domestic banking more than international banking, so international was dropped, then individual loans more than mortgages so mortgages were dropped, they finally got down to financing bass boats in the Sacramento delta and that's when Northwest took them over.

Volvo needs a mix of products to sell IMHO. Rejecting all models except the one that will sell the most is not a successful business plan, again IMHO.

I see no reason the Ocean Race editions didn't sell other than VCNA's non-existent marketing efforts.

"Geesh, people didn't come in and beg to buy one"

As long as I am on my soapbox, with US auto sales at 9 million units a year, there is a tremendous pent up demand for automobiles building up, cars are just wearing out, and when that demand is released, I hope Volvo has something to sell because there are a lot of guys on North Scottsdale that do.

When you are paying the flooring expenses, or worse yet paying the whole car off because it's been on the lot too long then you can decide what cars to carry. The hallmark of an unsuccesful business plan is to carry cars that don't sell and end up choking your flooring.

Marketing had zero to do with it. It was strictly the color. Customers simply didn't like the color. That isn't something you can overcome with marketing.
Volvo customers tend to be conservative in their choices.

There is something more conservative than ocean blue?

Yet they didn't bring many over in the first place. IIRC, the locals had no problem moving the few they received........or selling the few used ones they see.

White, Black, Lava, Willow Green, Crystal Green, even Ruby Red did much better.
Ocean Blue is not a conservative color.

You live in the best market for Volvo. Outside of the NE, that car didn't sell well or quickly.
Re: Ocean Race (VolvoMax)

Max, maybe the Scottsdale, AZ area has a particular problem in identifying with the Volvo Ocean Race, or identifying with water in general. What, Phoenix must be 300 miles from open water.

Car didn't sell well in Miami, LA, SF or any city. At the end VCNA was BEGGING us to take Ocean Race cars.

I'm not a XC70 person, but I think that is a one great looking blue. I remember when I caught sight of an Ocean Race XC90 from a distance and it just stood out as one rich looking car. The badging is nicely understated.
Re: Ocean Race (silvesterkok)

Nice photo.

What beach was the picture taken at?
