I'm new to the forum and thought I'd say 'hi'. I've had my eye on Volvo's ever since they released the 850GLT models and when the new S40/V50 came out a couple of years ago it knocked me off my feet! Both cars are stunning. Currently I have a Mazda3 which I love but I'm getting a little bored of it. I priced out an S40 when it first came out and it was just too much money for me, but now it seems as though the Volvo dealers are willing to negotiate a lot more on the cars.
I was hoping I could get some feedback from Canadian members (Toronto area would be even better) on the following:
- What kind of discount can I expect on a base S40 T5?
- What other charges are applied to the final purchase price (admin charges, window etching, etc.)?

Also, I've only ever owned Japanese cars which have been very reliable for me over the years. To be honest, I'm a bit nervous looking at the S40 because of some of the stories I've read on this and other forums. It definately appears as though some of the bugs have been worked out for the 2006 models. Does anyone know when the 2007 models are supposed to arrive?
Sorry for all the questions, but I'm racking my brain as to whether I should switch to the Volvo.
Thanks in advance

Re: Noob saying 'hi' (TheProfessor)

When I picked up my car last Friday the dealer told me they're scheduling MY06's late into this summer. No clue on MY07's. I went to 4 other dealers when I did my research before I got the best deal at Erin Mills Volvo with Mike Lepp (you're welcome Mike for the plug if you're snooping around in here).

Welcome to the forum Professor, it's always good to see fellow canucs here.
I trust window etching was free (at least for me, I'd never asked for it, they did it on their own). If you are looking for a deal - then I guess it'd be better to pickup MY06, after '07 will have arrived. I was considering Mazda too, but it just didn't cut for me, nearly not the fun I'm getting in S40. If you are a spirited driver - get a T5, lot more power, 2.4i'ers keep asking what can be done to get a couple more horses under the hood IMO T5 is (was) a better deal when you consider all options VS standard package in T5. Don't be afraid of scary stories, remember that most of us are more sensitive to their cars and all little quirks then the rest of drivers' population. I had no serious issues so far, fingers crossed.

And welcome to the forum! My S40 was a demo vehicle. Looking back, not only did I save a lot of $$$, buying a demo also ensured that all the software/hardware updates were performed. This was especially important on a (then) new platform.

Thanks everyone for the replies! When I had priced out the S40 when it first came out the dealer I was negotiating with told me that the etching was $600 and that it was not something I could waive. Needless to say I was not impressed and ceased all contact with that dealer (Newmarket Volvo).
If I can swing it, I'd likely go for an '06 in order to try and save some money.
If any of the Ontario members get a chance, I would greatly appreciate it if you could post up what other charges I have to factor in to my budget. If it makes a difference, the car will likely be leased.
Thanks again everyone for the warm welcome!

Re: (TheProfessor)

I'll double check my contract this weekend. But if you can take advantage of the Multiple Security Deposit option, you can bring the lease rate down to 0.1% with the new lease plans. WICKED DEAL indeed. You'll be saving 1% on GST as of July 1st if you opt to lease it instead of finance. They also waive the first month/security deposit on the new plans.

Re: Noob saying 'hi' (TheProfessor)

Nice to see fellow a few fellow Canucks. I am from Winnipeg and I leased my 2006 S40 T5 AWD Sport Package/ Premium Audio/ Leather about a month ago. I turned in a 2002 V40 so I got Volvo loyaly lease rate of 0.1%, first month payment waived, no damage deposit and I negotiated a $2,000 discount off list. I drove away for less than $40 and don't make my first lease payment until mid-June. I put no cash down and my monthly lease payment is less than what I could get on a loaded Accord, Altima or Acura TSX. I wouldn't trade my S40 for any of these in a million years (maybe a G35x or 325xi would tempt me).
I would only wait for MY07 if direct iPod/mp3 connectivity is really important to you as you will not find a totally satisfactory aftermarket solution no matter what anybody tells you. Other changes are extremely minor and not worth waiting for.
Do try to go for the T5 whether FWD or AWD. I was not happy with the power of the 2.4.

One more question for anyone who might be willing to help:
I've never leased a car before and am strongly considering leasing the Volvo. Is there any 'play' with the residual value after lease end? Of course if the residual is higher than the monthly payments will be more affordable, and if I wasn't intending on keeping the car at lease end this would work in my benefit.
I know for other car companies the value at lease end is fixed based on the length of term but am not sure about Volvo.

I believe in Georgia there was a recent offer for the 2.4 for 299 a month i believe 48 mos. I sold my 04.5 after 18 mos with 26kmi for a $6k loss =335/mo. I did get it through military sales though.

I leased mine with the intention of buying out at the end if all goes well over the next 39 months. My lease is back-end loaded. So my current monthly payments are really low but it'll cost me more in the end because of the very high residual. If you plan on buying it, opt for the low mileage lease (20,000km). I did that. Originally, I was fixed on 25,000 but as I thought about it more and more, I realized why would I pay more for the extra mileage if I'm going to buy it out in the end. Who cares if I go over.

Re: (rodlentino)

Yeah, if/when we lease it we'll definately be going for the low km lease (20K per year). The car would be for my wife and she only drives about 10K per year anyways so there should be no problems on that end
We're going to go test drive the 2.4i 5 speed within the next couple of weeks and see what kind of deals they willing to offer.
One more question: How easy/hard is it to get out of a lease early? I know that some of the options are to either pay a penalty (though I don't know how much that would be), or to have somebody else take over the lease. Any other options?
