The noise , which is a constant whining , humming noise type noise, not just when starting, seems to be coming right out of the area where the brake/clutch fluid reservoir is. That reservoir appears empty....when I unsecrewed the top there was a black rubber flange of some type underneath the cap.
Can I remove that to add DOT 4 brake fluid? There are a bunch of precautions on the cap but with my eyes I could not read and had to go back to work. The noise seems to be like an electrical noise almost sing songy but is constant , unaffected by acceleration or braking.

Ummm........
You should fill that, and wonder if your Clutch slave cylinder inside your transmission has all the fluid leaking out of it.
That is of course if that reservior is truly empty. There should be a warning and yellow triangle lit up on your dash saying low fluid.

No warning light on....the fluid is clear right? Can I pull out that black rubber stopper under the cap? I would need to...I have never driven a vehicle with a stopper like that under the cap for the brake fluid...what is its purpose?

Re: (bdoon51)

Just pull that rubber thingy off. It just helps prevent dirt falling in from a dirty cap I assume.
Clear/yellowish liquid depending on what you use.

Re: Noise ...Again Could it be related to brake/clutch fluid? (bdoon51)

Are you sure it is empty? Clean fluid is hard to see. Shake the plastic resevoir a little to confirm. If it is empty, there would have been a light.

Re: Noise ...Again Could it be related to brake/clutch fluid? (rogersampson)

You are absolutely correct...it is full...and that noise is actually coming from down in the front of the engine....it just sounds like it is behind the instrument panel when I am in the driver's seat. The noise could be anything....my car was run into last year...guy doing 40 to 45 mph hit front drivers side wheelwell area. Shopr(s) had my car for almost 6 months...body shop had to sub it to Annapolis Volvo. They said Monday they would take a look at it.
I wish I had kept my 98 T5 as a back up vehicle. At the time it seemed to be an unnecessary luxury to pay insurance for it ... backward vision is always 20/20?
