No Telescoping Sun Visor??

Has anyone else been annoyed by the fact that Volvo forgot to make the Sun Visor Telescoping? BMW and Audi both have that simple feature as standard. I’m surprised XC90 owners have not pushed Volvo to include this...

Maybe only tall folks like me notice it because I have to put the seat so far back that the Visor doesn’t cover 5 inches of the driver side window.

I also question why that is not a standard feature. From a safety point it should be in all of their cars.

Nope. Such a bummer. I put a pair of VisorMates on my sunvisors. Yes I know it's cheezy for an $80K SUV but they do actually work very well. http://visormates.com/

Of course. Who needs to see the road, or other vehicles, when driving?
Those gaps around the visor on both sides are inexcusable. It's just poor design. Puzzling, because if there is one thing that I hate about Scandinavian countries, is driving around with the sun stuck on the horizon in mid-seasons. Super-annoying. So how could they mess it up is beyond me.

When I drive and it's bright out I use my sunglasses....

You are right. All of those spoiled millennial... entitled bastards expecting their cars to work! I mean, when if fought in the war, we had no visors on our Jeeps. Freaking bunch of whiners.

As a matter of fact, I don't understand why Volvo insists on putting airbags in cars either. It's just such a waste of money. I just tie a pillow to my chest and bam! - I am protected. Double-advantage - you can rip the heater out of your car as well, pillow keeps you warm. Because, who needs heating. Wear gloves. Spoiled kids, I swear.

I ceramic tinted my entire front windshield with 85% clear. Cuts down 99%uv 45% hear and 75% glare. Looks stock and if that doesn’t work I wear sunglasses 🙂. The visor is so wide on the xc I have never felt the need for anything to slide out.

So, did they change it in the 2019? Because in the 2017, and as others continue to complain, it doesn't provide complete coverage whatsoever. If you sit forward of the halfway point into the driver side window, then, maybe, but, if you're taller, or, have long legs, and have to have the seat around 3/4 or more back into the window length, the visor doesn't provide any coverage for most of the day, especially in Southern California.

Forgot"? You really think so?

I am surprised you did not notice that during your test-drive and you are bringing it up now...

Of course i noticed it immediately. I'm mentioning it here in hopes of generating enough interest to get Volvo's attention and get them to fix it for next Model Year... venting too ;)

fully protective sun visor

We replaced Infiniti for our factory delivered XC90. Infiniti had sliding insert that extended sun glare protection. Then we bought an Audi as second car. The Audi has simple and cheap means of coverage - the visor slides along the visor post. One would think that glare protection would occur in any seat position in a Volvo.

I nearly bought an Audi Q7 instead of the Volvo. The Q7 had 2 visors actually, so you can cover both the side window and windshield at the same time, and yes it was telescoping :)

I've finally found the time (and a 3D printer) to create my very own extension to the xc90 sun visor. I've been testing this for a while now and it seems to work quite well and it fits optically the car too. Is there interest "out there" to eventually buy such a thing? If you have interest please reply or send me a PM, I need some feedback around pricing, color, etc...

OMG YES!!!! Price would depend on the material/build quality. But if it looks stock, i would be willing to pay at least $50 for it. Colors should be beige and black, which i think are the only two color options available on headliners. Post a pic please!

Here you go: once the flap is closed up it is pretty much invisible. I've got a full leather black interior and black is ok (my personal preference). With the flap down, the extension doesn't interfere with the courtesy mirror and the round form fits the gap pretty good (I went through a number of different shapes). Material is PETG so it should hold up to 100C (summer temps compatible) easily. I am looking for a beige PETG filament still 'cause I don't really want to start painting, but this could be an option. My idea for the price would be around 20/25$ but I am still making my calculations :D

Thanks, chmax. Received my visor extension yesterday and tried it this morning on my commute. Worked very well. Highly recommend to others.

Intrigued! But only 1 of your pictures are visible, the rest got rejected by the system as “invalid attachment”

Please repost the pictures.

I have the same colors as you, Black leather interior with blonde headliner.

Aawww.... i was so hoping you were talking about making the sun visor articulating (telescoping) so that it would shade the sun while turned to the driver/passenger side windows. That’s what i really need. That small area that yours covers doesn’t help in that regard. I suppose you could print something that would attach to the end of the visor, much like what you already designed, which could articulate out once the visor is deployed to the side window. But i would pay $100 to someone that can get the stock visor to simply telescope a few inches to move and cover the side window for taller drivers. I would even ship my visor to them!

make a drawing on a piece of paper and send me the pic, it sounds an easy mod but I'd like to understand exactly what you are trying to get ... gruss

I have a fully adjustable visor that works for both the front and side windows. See below for link. It is custom for Volvo. Legal in California. Additionally, it provides coverage and protection from the sun and sunburn. My dermatologist ordered me to use this starting when I was 17 and living in SoCal. I am now 60 with no skin cancer issues (knock on wood). No, I am not kidding. You should use one of these everyday in SoCal.

So you are saying that MAGA Trump Hats will prevent the sun from blinding you via the side windows? REALLY? So aside from the crappy commercial for MAGA hats, tell us how they or any of the other ball caps protects your face and eyes as opposed to your head in the car.

Well perhaps you did not purposely use that site to mention MAGA Trump Hats? But if you scroll down you will see what I am referencing. As for how ball caps work. Are you really that insane? We are discussing the need for sun visors that protect not only in the front, but on the side window. Our visors do not extend within the frame as do some in other makes of cars. I see you do not even drive a XC90 so you are just throwing in your 2 cents. Well read the post and you will see people are actually very serious about this topic.

I was checking out prices for the Audi Q7 visor. It is not cheap at about $400. I could not figure out how it worked. Thanks for posting that picture. That is certainly the right way to go. If we could figure out how to add another visor just for the side, that would be really nice. We could probably get someone to make a bracket or holder that would use the same screw holes in the XC90. Then it would be much easier to make this happen. I bet if the price were within reason that a whole lot of people would opt to buy. Now you can fabricate something then put a 3D laser scan into SolidWorks then make it using a 3D Printer.

Yes. As you can probably see, there is a much deeper indent into the roof liner to accommodate 2 sun visors. If we found someone to print the inside one in 3mm thickness, then that may be able to fit under the other one. A new set of brackets would probably also need to be designed to hold both.

I found a 2017 driver side Audi Q7 sun visor. So I purchased it. I wanted to really take a look at how they put it together. They must have changed in 2016 or 2017 because of a refresh. Anyway, once I get it I will take a bunch of pictures and post them. They also sell the remote holders that are placed to stabilize the visor either on the side window or on the front. I did not purchase those.....Baby steps. Retirement seems to afford me extra time to screw around. Love it.

Wow, cool. It's a very ingenious system. I nearly bought the Q7 over the XC90 just because of those double visors. That's how much I dislike having sun in my face while driving! [emoji38]

I agree that putting up a screen tends to block out more of the window. I just don't like having to put them in and then take them out. I want something that goes with the car. I would have the windows tinted but it is an easy ticket in California, though I am thinking more about that as an option. Our rear door have built in shades. They are probably not in the front doors from a legal standpoint. Not sure but that is what I suspect.

I got the Audi Visor and took a bunch of pictures. I removed my visor and held the Audi in its place. It kind of fits. The Volvo uses two bolts to hold it in place. You could swing from it, it is so strongly attached. The Audi uses just one bolt for both visors.

Yea, that telescoping function is such a simple and cheap feature to build in.... just doesn’t make any sense that Volvo can’t see that...

Hopefully someone will figure out how to modify an existing Volvo sun visor to be able to telescope. I’m sure there are many of us that would be happy to pay (handsomely) for that modification!

I could take apart the Audi and see how it telescopes. Another approach might be to source out the visors. Either Volvo makes them, or they order them from a supplier. I am more familiar with suppliers in the US.

I removed the cover carefully. Interesting. Not sure if I could remove the metal container and install it in my visor?
