Hey All!
I have owned my S40 T5 AWD for two weeks tomorrow. So far, I have spent eight hours in the waiting room at Portland Volvo and $120 filling my tank four times (in six hundred miles) My gas mileage according to the computer is around 14 in the suburbs, and goes to 17 when I am on 295 going to the dealership. (average) My drivers side rear tweeter started buzzing at 400 miles, and now my center speaker does the same at deep tones (prem. sound and nav.)
Is this a sign of things to come, or is this normal?
Should I bear with it or trade it for the 325xi I wanted to further overspend on ?
Thanks!

I'm surprised that you haven't been here longer doing your pre-purchase research.
Read the archives to get a sense of "normal". Remember that folks post about having problems more than not having problems. Driving style can be a significant factor in fuel mileage too.
We picked up our V50 T5 AWD in Sweden earlier this month and put 1,800 miles on it in two weeks of driving across Europe and the UK. We averaged about 25 mpg with some enthusiastic road driving mixed with a good bit of urban (the computer said our average speed was 55 mph). Petrol ran around $7.00/gal.
We had absolutely no problems with the car. Our premium sound (w/o nav and the tiny center speaker) sounded fine too.
Your call on the beemer. I drove the previous chassis before I purchased my XC70 last year. I wasn't overly impressed, the T5's turbo makes a big difference here in Colorado's thin air.

Re: NIGHTMARE!! (meiac09)

I used to get about 140 miles a tank before I started using the freeway going to school, now I can barely get 210 miles. I have a lead foot, so with the engine constantly under boost the fuel mileage can suffer. However I averaged about 28 mpg during a 160 mile trip, which is pretty good. About 3 weeks after I got my s40, it died on me and wouldn't start after that, so the dealer had it for a whole week, and finally fixed it. There was a rattle in my front suspension when I first got it, and a few other minor problems, but nothing that makes me hate the car. You'll have problems with any car you have(including BMW ), and the ones you have aren't that bad.

Re: NIGHTMARE!! (meiac09)

My V50 AWD's fuel economy was low for the first 5 or 6 tanks, then it steadily rose. The ECU doesn't start to adapt until it has 1K or 2K miles on it, then it generally rises until 5K to 10K miles. Even so, don't expect high 20's from an AWD, I get low to mid 20's (avg) personally.
Tom.

Hmm, what's a nightmare here, especially with two !! ? Gas mileage? It's normal for the brand new car (enjine breake in, CPU adaptation, etc). Tweeters? big deal. Guess beemers install different ones? I suspect all of them are made by the same Chinese guy anyway
If you are generally disappointed with your car - then you should've done your homework better. Each and every brand has it's own problems, so you'll be hard-pressed to find an ideal vehicle. Deal with minor issues and be happy with your car, it's a lot of fun, trust me

Re: NIGHTMARE!! (meiac09)

Why would somebody want to trade in a S40 with the EPA rating of 20 mpg / 29 mpg on a BMW with a rating of 19 mpg / 28 mpg to save on fuel?
First thing I'd check is your right foot, after which I'd realize any 3400 lbs 4wd, 218+ HP auto slush box ain't going to get 1900 lbs 90 HP Honda Civic MPG.

While the commentary here on fuel economy during the early miles, your driving style, and so on is all valid, 14/19 is terrible and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The EPA test methodology is a joke and it's the exception when you'll match or beat its numbers anyway, and on top of that the S40 is a thirstier car than one might expect. But it should be doing better than 14/19 except on an occasional exception basis, or if you're just driving the heck out of it or are in stop-and-go most of the time. Are you?

I remember how I would have driven a turbocharged car when I was 16!
I think the kid was trolling and we may have given the topic more life than it deserved.

Re: NIGHTMARE!! (meiac09)

Sorry to hear about the problems with your car. I'm getting 25 MPG mostly in town, with short interstate stretches as I shoot from one end of the city to another...no more that 10 miles at a stretch for the interstate runs.
Just a Ti, not a turbo, air conditioning on, and brisk driving. The car has 2,500 miles on it. I may have seen 28 MPG on a 167 mile interstate trip. I too hope the mileage will improve a little as it breaks in. Then again, it is better than the Mitsubishi Montero I was driving Far less painful experience at the gas pump these days.
The Walter Mitty in mean wishes for a turbo
