I recently got my turbo replaced under warranty for a leaking issue. I picked up the R today from Ontario Volvo and let me say it is a whole new beast, even in 100 degree weather. Did not give it WOT, but with the little gas i gave it, it picked up faster than before. Also got new tranny and clutch under warranty.
My question is this, how loud is the turbo spool for a "newer production turbo?" Dealer terms not mine, but let me say that it is LOUD ! It leterally sounds like a freaking semi spooling! Is this normal or is there something wrong? I took it back immediately after hearing it and the technitian did the wastegate test in front of me and it was opening at the volvo specs, and nothing was disconnected or connected wrong. It was a first for them too, because they have never changed a turbo on an R.
The R is not my first turbo car, and I have installed upgraded turbos in my MR2 before and I've never heard a turbo this loud in a non diesel vehicle. Dealer disconnected my boost guage (because the carmax inspector was not going to pass it if it was modified in any way), so i don't know what im boosting.
any comments or wisdom welcome...searched but no luck...
will post video later if I can capture the sound
- Alex

The grommet in the firewall near your clutch pedal has not been re-installed properly.
This is not uncommon in these cars when the trans is pulled.

Im not talking about interior noise. I'm talking about a loud a$$ turbo spool! The technitian took it for a drive with the service guy and I could hear my car from down the street!
My transfer case broke, which took out my tranny, which took out my clutch, which took out my flywheel, atleast that's what Ontario volvo told carmax maxcare extended warraty services. As for the turbo, it had a slight leak and my service guy had maxcare get me a new one.
as for the boost guage theory, the whole hose was replaced where i spliced into the old one to get the reading.
I will definitely post a video for all you non believers.
- Alex

Wow good kill on the warranty. Try to get a new angle gear while you're at it.

+1
Although I'm not exactly clear on the "near clutch grommet" I too had a noise problem with the steering shaft boot being off it's bearing. This too was after a tranny change.
mwh

The ECU is/was probably reseted during the surge (disconnected power to the ECM) so your lazy car is in re-adjucation at moment to learn your driving style.
Doing this often is not adviceable coz it could induce "pinging" at the learning-time and damage the engine-internals.
Turbo never changed.

I'll 3rd the "boot near the steering column being loose"... combine that with a fresh turbo with crisp vanes and you'd definitely be hearing some new noises...
