Newbie question: Has anyone ever converted a S40 or V40 to a manual transmission from a auto?

Hi Gang,

I am brand new to this forum. I searched the forums and cannot find any info related to converting a V40 or S40 from an automatic to a manual transmission.

Has anyone ever converted or know of anyone who has converted a V40 or S40 to a manual transmission.

I have a soft spot for the V40 and I would love to have this car in a manual transmission.

I see in Mexico the S40 1.9T was sold with a stick and of course in Europe they are very common.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Steve

there are guy's there that have done it. this is not a very active forum for the s/v40's.

best of luck, it has been done.

Thank you!

Joined the forum on your recommendation. Lots of good info.

Looks like people want to do the swap but no-one has posted a completed swap post yet.

Anyone import a S40 from Mexico?

I am thinking that would be the best route.

Then swap out everything you need.

Nobody on s40concepts.net has done an auto to manual swap. there is much talk and speculation on if it can be done. the manual transmission the s40's use is the M56. which is also used in some of the 850 models. However, there is more speculation as to whether or not its exactly the same because there are two M56 transmission. I would suggest contacting Torpis on s40concepts.net. he has much information and probably the most access to additional information on the s40 model.

i thought carlos had mentioned someone in the uk, or maybe, the netherlands, who had done one. i know you can get the parts for it in europe/scandinavia. you can google parts houses and or wrecking yards too.

friends who work at volvo have said it has been done. parts are available. they sold manual cars pretty well in europe.

check with one of the mexican members on s40concepts. he is in guadalajara i think. and, i think he has a manual 5 speed.

well if anybody has done it, they aren't sharing! lol
as for parts being available, you can go to Canada or Mexico to get parts. depending on which is closer. Mexico would be cheaper though. I've considered it heavily and almost pulled the trigger and did it. But the project came out of the blue when my transmission died so I didn't have much for funding. I can try to dig up some old notes I had on the subject. I even had a check list of all the little miscellaneous parts needed. I would suggest shipping from Mexico or Canada on as many parts as possible to save you some $$$. Are you seriously considering it or were you just thinking about it?

Thanks for the email.

I would love to get some help.

On the question of seriousness, yes, but not for an unlimited budget

I think I would go as high as $3000 for all parts and labor.

Ironically a total s40 in Mexico is a little under $6K, problem is importing it.

Cars from Mexico go through the same import process as cars used to go through during the 80's grey market days.

Unless the car has NHSTA and EPA stickers already on it, you are looking at a very long and expensive import process

Just my two cents.

well just pick up the parts from Mexico. Mexico has junk yards. Just find a totaled T4 or 2.0T with the manual gearbox. Make sure it was hit from the rear or something just to be safe! I would suggest getting an ECU from a manual 2.0T as well. The 2000-2004 s40 has an adaptive transmission. There is the engine computer and the transmission computer. They are constantly sharing information back and form. In theory, the ECU would recognize the transmission not talking and do who knows what. Either pick up the manual 2.0T ECU or do a lot of extra work finding out how to trick the ECU. good luck! so are you on s40concepts.net? look me up: EVOLVO ( my name on here backwards)
