I just took delivery of a 2004 XC90 and want to check/change all fluids. I can't find the dip-stick for the transmission fluid. Can anyone tell me where this is?!

Re: newbie, can't find transmission fluid dipstick! (austinJeff)

There is no user-accessible dipstick on either 04 XC90 transmission (yours a 2.5T or T6?). I would not recommend changing the fluid yourself, it's something of a dealer job. How many miles?
Tom.

The transmission dipstick on my 2004 T6 is in the back side of the engine bay, at eye level. Check the manual for more information.

I can only speak about the T6.
Got it. What I meant is that it is not hidden behind anything and it is near the top level of things you can find under the hood. You are correct that that is not exactly "eye level". Sorry for the confusion.

I just took delivery of a 2004 XC90
Jeff....
Did you take delivery from a Volvo dealer?....an independent used dealer or an indivdual?
Here's what the owners manual says:
"Check automatic transmission fliud level ONLY if an external leak is identified. Volvo recommends changing the ATF every 52,500 miles ONLY on vehicles used for towing."
The transmission is a sealed system and unless you experience some sort of transmission issue...it does not need to be changed. In any event...go to a dealer and be sure it gets the proper replacemnt fluid and is done by a Volvo tech. Not saying that you are not capable...just IMO...I would have the dealer do it!
As the owner's manual makes no mention of how to monitor transmission fluid levels, I simply figured it's (as the previous post indicates) that it was a closed system that required no fluid level monitoring.

I'm not sure about the 2.5 but I know for sure the T6 has one and the V8 does not.
I hope Volvo does not consider their sealed transmission to have "lifetime" automatic transmission fluid (ATF) like Volkswagen and Audi does.
Check out some sealed transmission and ATF woes here and here.

Re: newbie, can't find transmission fluid dipstick! (universityvolvoOSD)
Took delivery from a Honda dealer that got it as a trade. Got a better deal because Volvo hadn't inspected/certified it yet. It has 29k on it and it's the 2.5T AWD. I'm one of those people that like change all fluids when I get a car (or atleast inspect them), so I was frustrated by the lack of dip-stick!
Thanks for all the replies!

"Lifetime" is actually a marketing spin term. The transmission fluid will burn if subjected to severe duty (notice the service recommendation to replace the fluid if the car has been used for towing...). Personally, I change the transmission fluid every 15,000 miles.
