New XC90 owner - painting trim question, iPod, Heico

Hi folks - LOVE the forum. The wife and I on are Volvo #3. S40 with no kids, V70 2.5t after kid #1, XC90 T6 now that kid #2 is in the picture. We just bought a beautiful Ruby Red 2003 XC90 T6, charcoal interior, DVD, all the options (excpet xenon and nav that I am aware of), premium stereo etc etc.
I have a couple questions....
iPod?? Please oh please don't tell me the only option is the FM transmiter since there is no tape deck and no iPod direct connection option....
Anyone ever painted the door handles, door protection molding or mirrors to match the car color (ala the new V8's..)??? My dealer wants $2,000 to do it. Alternative suggestions?? I like the Heico chrome mirror covers.
Finally, Heico accessories - I really like some of the extra zip they might add to the XC90 - anyone have suggestions, alternatives, etc on Heico or other brands???
Thanks again folks!
And if you ever need fly fishing advice in the Northwest let me know!!
Fish

Modified by fish2live at 5:00 PM 8-9-2006

There is no direct ipod connection w/ the factory sound system.
We have painted quite a few XC90's over the years, $2k is a fair price to do it right.
You can have Earl Scheib just spray the trim for a couple hundred, but it will look crappy.
I know that there are at least 1/2 dozen people who have done it to their '04 R's. (05's and up changed to painted mouldings).

door handles and side moldings painted including new side moldings, for $800. Looks great! I highly recommend it, but not for 2K. See Gallery pic from my signature
Hey Mark,
Now THAT sounds like a fair deal to me. I am tempted to drive to CO to have it done and enjoy some fishing on the way with the $1200 I would be saving... damn, not a bad idea really. If it happens I'll contact you for details if that is ok.
Mason

I went to several shops, many wouldn't even qoute it, others were outragous, including the dealer. I ended up at a local shop I've used a few times before. The dealer wanted almost as much for the side molding parts as the total job cost and I have a lifetime guarantee against everything but door dings. I bought new, smoothed and ready to paint side moldings from autowebaccessories.com, and reused the door handles. Looks like factory and the color match is perfect.
The only issues I've had were the rubber gaskets around the door handles were torn when they reassembled the doors, but the shop replaced at no cost within a few days, and I'm taking it back to them tommorrow so they can tighten up a handle cover peice thats worked its way loose.

I would go to a local shop, with parts already in hand...
If you bring them the primed door moldings, they will realized the prep they are going to have to do is minimal...
??? about the handles..... They may be easy to get off???,, I don't know, I've never done an XC90...
You may also want to consider a touch up service (such as Carnica)... They will give you a good enough finish for the side moldings... I only suggest this if you just give them the pieces, do not let a place like this spray anything while it's on your car (in my exprerience these guys love overspray.)
Probably would cost about $200 plus parts doing it this way....

all my stuff was painted off the car - the only way I'd do it to avoid overspray and quality risks

I think VolvoMax's 2K price includes both the bumpers too.
