We ended up grabbing an '09 today while the incentives were still good. A couple questions for the forum:
1. We bought this without the convenience package, so the back windows don't have the darker tint. We intend to get this done by an outside shop, does anyone know what level of tint the convenience package has for comparison?
2. We got it with Nav, weren't looking for it, but was part of the deal. How is the Nav data updated, and is it something we should have done before we take delivery?
thanks ahead!
JF

Re: New XC70 Questions (Surf NH)

Factory tint is hard to match, because it doesn't really block UV, just visible light. So it's fairly dark, but keeps the interior hot.
Generally a 40% tint will match it.
If you don't want to go to dark, do a 50% but with good UV. That's generally legal, but will keep the car a lot cooler.
If you're looking to not be able to see in, go with a 30%

Re: New XC70 Questions (Needsdecaf)

My XC70 comes with tint on the back and rear side windows. Not sure their rating though, sorry.
But another window related question: does the XC70 use laminated glasses on the sides? I read it somewhere the older V70 (pre-08) has laminated glasses on the sides. I hope the new XC/V70 still has it. Any ideas? Thx.
As a comparison, I had an S40 loaner, silver w/beige and that one had a hard time keeping the interior cool.
Percentage wise I think it's juuust a tad below 40%, I'd say 30-35% but don't count on that. I had 25% on my S40 and it's clearly darker than the XC.

If it blocked heat, they'd tell you.
I have asked a couple of people familliar with the glass industry. Compared to real tint with the same % transmissivity, it's a joke.

Re: (Needsdecaf)

Thanks for the feedback......I live in NH and I believe there's a legal limit of 35% tint, but I'll verify this. Good point, when I get it tinted, will want to make sure the heat blockage is improved by whatever is used.
Picked up the car today.....our 5th Volvo wagon. Initial impresssion: the best one so far....really awesome car. Smoother, quieter, more solid, etc, etc. Also, the storage area in the back seems larger than our 2004, slightly deeper in length. We're happy, that's the important point.
JF

I was thinking of matching my front ones but now I'm having second thoughts as to also tinting the rear ones, but with higher percentage.
Another question though, will the "privacy glass" shatter, compared to a tinted windows where it stays "intact" sort of?

Re: (Surf NH)

Don't know what % ours is, but 35% is not that dark, so I wouldn't worry about that at all, if that's what you're getting. I had 35% all around on my last car (including front windows), and other than very dark and rainy nights when you had to pay a bit more attention to see out well, I didn't regret it after having it for a few years. Front tints are illegal here, but they weren't really enforcing them, and I think the car looks way better with all windows tinted, especially a black car.
If you're going to get a darker tint like 20%, then that might be one thing, but I think if I'm not mistaken, SUV's rear factory tints are in fact closer to the 20% mark.
EDIT: I'm right, factory SUV tints are 20%.
"Almost all factory tints are pretty dark, allowing in only about 20 percent of the light."
See article:
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/f...C8B63
Cost AU$490. You can tell what you have from the icons. Here is what is on my front windows:
