I just got a set of wheels from the Tire Rack and when I pulled the OEM wheels off, much to my surprise, there seems to be some sort of peg sticking out of the hub. My Haynes manual shows this peg thing and points out that it has to fit through a hole in the spare or in the gap in the OEM wheels but my new wheels don't have a space for it. Can I remove the peg or do I have to get different wheels? 2000 V70. Thanks.
http://www.georgeco.org/images/volvo_hub.jpg

You may remove the peg.
It's a guide hole for Volvo wheels, It also helps to put a wheel back the exact way it came off (for balance purposes), but not necessary for anything else
(What wheels did you buy)?

Makes it easier to get the lug bolts in, as the rotors don't flop around. I agree though, not really necessary.
