Just saying hey, and getting my intro post in. My name is Nate and I'm from Maryland. I just bought a '04 Volvo S60 R and have stumbled my ways upon this site. I'm new with Euro cars, but am not new to the car scene. This is my 7th car... and only 21 years old haha. Before this, I owned a '05 Nissan Altima SE-R which was t-boned by some young kid who ran a redlight. Before that, 3 Mustangs...
So far, I couldn't be happier with my choice in a car. It fits me perfectly and seems to be an all around great car. Its titanium grey metallic with the natural atacama leather. Its also my first automanual car, as its sporting the geartronic transmission.
Soon I'll be doing some stuff to the Volvo. I'm known to do some custom, subtle, tasteful painting... But we'll see. The car is great as it is. Just needs a turbo timer and some tinting to start off with.

Welcome to SS. R owners are special and this is a special place.
A little tip, be sure to use the Google Search feature first when looking up info, otherwise you may need a flame suit

Every turbo car needs a proper warm up as well as cool down period to avoid costly repairs/problems.
This is the most important thing for me when driving turbo cars, I see very young kids beating their turbos to death by pushing their cars to limits and turning off as soon as they stop.

Re: New w/ '04 S60 R (Token Blk Guy)

I was looking at turbo timers when I first got my car too.
It's not really necessary. Cooling in Turbos has really improved over the years. If you do spirited driving, by the time you turn down the neighborhood to park your car, the turbo will be back to normal. The only worry would be to do a 1/4 mi run, brake hard, then turn the car off.
For most driving, you would never need this part. IF you REALLY beat on it, just let it sit for 1 minute before you turn it off, I've never had to do this though.

instead of turbo timer, I would get a remote start system that has it

Synthetic oil is also a must for better protection.

Re: New w/ '04 S60 R (xman03)

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and advice. So it seems like you all honestly seem that there is no use for a turbo timer. So far, I've just sat in my car for about a minute before getting out. It would be nice to have one though for my piece of mind haha.

Quote, originally posted by xman03 »

Welcome! When I'm out driving heavy I always give my car about 30-90 seconds to really chill out. It can't hurt the car and I'm extra cautious to begin with.
Welcome to the forums and enjoy the new R!

Save your money on the turbo timer. You'll need every penny for all the other mods (as the R is not as cheap to mod as your previous cars).
There is quite a bit of potential with this car so figure out what you want to do (power, performance, cosmetic) and let us know. The members here can always help point you in the right direction.

He came from a line of performace cars. Galant VR4( every possible mod you coudl think of), Various Audi's and then the M3 prior to the R and we was telling me with advance progress in turbo cooling and the use of full synthectic oil in the R a turbo timer is not really needed. Vs if you put a turbo on a Civic hatch and go to town its alittle different. He did advise not to rut in hard and then just shut it off. He usually would take a "cool down" lap around the block before parking his car and turning it off..
Man I feel old too, I just turned 31 and I was driving my 99 Prelude for the last 10 years before i picked up my R. Tomorrow will be anniversary of owning the prelude, July 4 1999 is when I got it.!! I was 21 when i got that... Man times have changed lol!!
Anyway man welcome and now its time for some pics.... Re: New w/ '04 S60 R (Token Blk Guy)

Well, its only been about a week since I've owned the car but I have been pretty busy with it. But first, let me post up the dealership pictures of what it looked like when I bought it. Gotta love the roof rack and tow hitch!

Roof rack removed

As of now, I have painted the factory Pegaeus R rims a dark silver metallic w/ flake (pretty much matches the body color) and I took the factory grill, dremeled it, and created a "custom" grill, much like the iPd grill. The rear has been semi-debadged. I opted to leave on the Volvo and R emblems. I have also painted the tow hitch and removed the stickers. I know, I know, I should remove the tow hitch, but it may come in handy. Sorry, but no pictures as of now of what it looks like, I'll get them tomorrow lol.
For the next mod, I would like to get it tinted and after that, who knows....

How would you compare the performance of your S60R vs Altima SE-R. I have a freind with one and it's pretty fast i think it's faster then the S60R is a straight line but thats it!

They're quick off the hole though, due to their low weight. If you have an 04/05 GT, I think the SE-R may take you.
Nate, you might want to re-think putting the AWD badges back on. If you get towed and the tow guy doesn't know it's AWD, he may damage the AWD system. Food for thought
