hey guys, i'm normally a v dub guy...however i want something safer for the wife especially after she was in the cabby when it was t-boned/totalled. no more driving coffins for her. me i still have my GTI.
so my question is regarding a '93 850 GLT. the owner is asking for 3000 CDN and it has 240k kms. the body/paint has normal wear for that mileage...it leaks oil, but it's clean. the owner told me that when they bought it they didn't know they had to change the timing belt at the time and well you can guess what happened next. they then rebuilt the engine, not sure if the valves get bent...they did try to restart it before they realized what happened.
anyway, besides perhaps new front struts and addressing the oil leak (gasket?) that need to be done, what should i look for? (and yes i reviewed the FAQ) what are the trouble spots and what kind i expect? how long do the tranny's last and does anyone know some good Volvo guys in Toronto? not sure i can do the work on it myself.
I think i'll come back and offer 1500 or 2000 but you guys know best.
sorry no pics, but i'll post if/when it becomes the next wife's car.
thanks and in advance for the advice.
E

Re: new to Volvos...newb questions on 850 (exerciseinfutility)

I personally would look pass the 93 and head for something 95 and up. Even 94 for that matter.
No offence guys to 93 owners, just like the 94 thru 97 years better.

I highly agree. Look for a later year. As I'm sure you know, VWs have their bugs for a few years after they're introduced. I owned several VWs before my Volvo. I'd really take the time to look for a 96/97. A good find will treat you very well. Things to look out for are leaking Rear Main Seals (RMS) dead A/C which is likely caused by a leaking evap. core. If it has power seats, the seat recline cable is known to fail. An easy fix however. Make sure the suspension is in good shape. The front spring seats and sway bar links are weak points and only last (I'd say) about 40-60K. Not really expensive in terms of parts. Stay away from Scan-Tech brand parts. Go original Volvo. A few bucks more will save you a lot of time and money in the end. Hope this helps and hope you find a good buy.
