Hi all,

I know this sounds crazy, but I'm a fairly experienced amateur mechanic and I can't find the dipstick. I also can't find where the dipstick would go if it was missing.

I know I checked the oil when I was looking at the car before I bought it.

Sorry for such a dumb question.

Hah!!! OK. I must have looked at and smelled the oil through the filler.

Well, the funny thing is that the manual shows a dipstick. That's what made me nuts.

One more question - the electronics can show you how many miles since the service reminder was last reset, but can it show you oil level? Like let's say you are down a half quart? Or the idiot mechanic overfilled it during an oil change?? Which was a big problem with my last Volvo since it took 5.5 quarts at an oil change.

I assume there is a drain plug and oil filter below. Ha. I usually change my own oil.

There is a factory oil fill tube which sits just behind the throttle plate and is capped. I'm not certain if there is a clear shot to crankcase oil level, maybe. The balance shaft and oil pump take up a bit of room but its possible if there is a clear path. A new tube would then need to be designed with a flexible "dip stick" to go around the throttle and up. I imagine if someone could come up with this, they may sell a few.

As @Oceans60R noted, here are some pics.
I do not think there is any room for a manual dipstick.
Either way, this engine did not get one.

Fake dipstick is there. Top will not come off.
Not much room to run the tube to top of the engine.

Next 2, bottom of engine showing balance shaft assembly.
Dipstick tube hole goes into the oil pan, balance shaft assembly is probably in the way.

This is a side view with oil pan removed.

Thanks for the pics. Yeah, not much room at all from what I remember. Might be possible to design a new tube but would take a little craftiness for it to be in a good spot for checking. Not something on my "to do" list, lol. While not ideal, the electronic sensor does function. But I'm Old School too and would prefer a manual dipstick present, just easier imo.

The sound of the 5 can be godlike (even more so than the 6) but you cannot turn a blind eye to the four having the superior powertrain. Being as small as the S60 is, it benefits hugely from the lighter and faster VEA drivetrain.

Does this car have one of the Volvo engines that may have the defective oil rings? I suggest keeping a log of the mileage between the add oil light messages. The warranty that came with my used 2015 S60 read that it was superseded by state law, so was extended from 3 months to a year and had a different definition required for a claim. Also, the chrome tail pipe tips had more black (unburned oil) at the bottom of their outlets.

The engine code matches but the serial number appears beyond the cut off when the piston ring change was implemented.
